Phylum Porifera Characteristics -Body walls with pores where water enters and oscula where water exits and sessile Body Symmetry - Completely lack symmetry Common Body Parts -Spongin (resilient, flexible protein fibers) Major Organ Systems -They don’t contain organs Primary Fertilization Method -They produce both sexually and asexually (internal and external)

  4. Phylum Cnidaria Characteristics - Medusa (umbrella shaped)or polyp (tube-shaped) bodies, stinging cells and a hollow body cavity. Body Symmetry - Radically symmetrical Common Body Parts - Two layers of cells, jellylike layer between two layers of cells. Major Organ Systems - Tissues for digestion, muscle movement, nerves, and sensors. Primary Fertilization Method - Sexual reproduction (external)

Phylum Platyhelminthes Characteristics -No internal cavities, long body with no limbs Body Symmetry -Bilateral Symmetry (central axis that divides the body into two completely symmetrical parts) Common Body Parts -Mouth and body with no limbs. Major Organ Systems -Three layers of tissue so that they have no need for circulatory or respiratory systems. Primary Fertilization Method -Sexual reproduction (external) and asexually (internal)

Phylum Annelida Characteristics - Long body that sometimes has many legs Body Symmetry - Bilaterally symmetrical Common Body Parts - Gut with mouth and anus Major Organ Systems - More than two layers of cells, organs, and tissues. Closed circulatory system, no respiratory organs, and a nervous system. Primary Fertilization Method -Sexual (external) reproduction

  8. Phylum Echinodermata Characteristics -Variable body shape but with no head, endoskeleton, spiny skin, tube feet Body Symmetry - 5-rayed symmetry, mostly radial, sometimes bilateral. Common Body Parts - Central spot where the rest of the limbs arrange around Major Organ Systems - Poor open circulatory system, a nervous system , no excretory organs, therefore no anus and a water-vascular system Primary Fertilization Method - Reproduce sexually (externally)

  9. Phylum Mollusca Characteristics - Soft-bodied, many covered by hard shells. Body Symmetry -Bilateral Symmetry Common Body Parts - Head, foot, and a mass of tissue that contains organ systems. Major Organ Systems - Organ systems for excretions, circulation, respiration, digestion, and reproduction. Primary Fertilization Method - Sexual reproduction (external)

Phylum Arthropoda Characteristics - 2 or 3 divided body section, exoskeleton made up of chitin and all arthropods molt (shed their smaller exoskeleton to form a new and larger one) Body Symmetry - Bilateral symmetry in most cases Common Body Parts - Jointed legs (3 – 400+), segmented bodies. Major Organ Systems - Circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems, brain, and ganglia. Primary Fertilization Method - Sexual (external) reproduction

Phylum Chordata Characteristics - Tail at some point in their development (humans’ tails are tailbones), fish have gills, amphibians live both on land and in water, reptiles are hard and covered in scales, birds have wings and feathers, mammals are covered in fur. Body Symmetry - Bilaterally symmetrical Common Body Parts - Notochord (strong, rod-like structure that can bend), tails, and vertebrates Major Organ Systems - Closed circulatory system made up with blood vessels, complete digestive system and the most highly developed nervous system of all animals Primary Fertilization Method - Chordates produce sexually (externally)
