  • The IB evaluates MYP schools every five years.
  • The evaluation process assesses schools’ implementation of the MYP on the Program Standards and Practices.
  • During the evaluation, the faculty at RM and JW:
    • Submitted assessment samples to IB (Spring 2010)
    • Completed a program self study (Fall 2011)

What’s been going on in the MYP worldwide?
  • The Program Standards and Practices governing all three IB programs were revised in 2009 and 2010.
  • The new Standards and Practices came into effect in January 2011.
  • While many aspects of the Standards and Practices were revised and streamlined, one marked change was the addition of the following language to this document:

9. The school supports access for students to the IB programme(s) and philosophy.

Requirements for the Middle Years Programme

    • The school strongly encourages participation for all students.
how did the visit go
How did the visit go?
  • The site evaluation team and IB regional office offered a number of commendations and recommendations to the schools.
  • In addition, the team presented two areas for future growth and development of the program:
    • Julius West Middle School and Richard Montgomery High School will enhance vertical and horizontal collaborative planning and reflection.
    • Richard Montgomery High School will implement a whole-school model to provide and optimum pathway toward successful completion of the program for all students in grade 10.
so what is next
So, what is next?
  • Based on the feedback received from IB, we have begun to address these two areas for growth.
  • Collaborative planning and reflection
    • Pre-service – Developing student learning expectations for Approaches to Learning
    • Pre-service – Teachers collaborate on MYP unit plans for the first nine weeks.
    • The goal of the school’s MYP committee has been revised to refocus this group on horizontal planning across subject areas in the 9th and 10th grades.
so what is next1
So, what is next?
  • Implementing the whole-school MYP
    • Teaching of units developed during pre-service
    • Whole-school and departmentalized professional development
    • External training and teacher attendance at IB Workshops
    • Revision of school and departmental websites to reflect MYP philosophy
    • Collaboration between teachers of 9th and 10th graders in and out of the MYP Pathway
    • Addition of SIP goal regarding the implementation of MYP
    • RM and JW faculty and administration worked with AEI to proactively develop a coherent plan for the implementation of the whole-school MYP.

why is this important
Why is this important?

From the MYP Standards and Practices

“Collaborative planning and reflection ensures that all teachers have an overview of students’ learning experiences” (C1.1a)

“The units of work are documented on unit planners and follow the Middle Years Programme planning process” (C2.1d)

In implementing a program that adheres to the MYP standards and practices, we can ensure that all of our students have access to the benefits of the MYP model of instruction.
