Basic Components • Personal Details • Name • Address • E-mail • Age?? • Education • Institution • Programme/Degree (class/grade point*&^%$?) • Year of completion
Other Relevant Content • Work Experience • Paid & Unpaid! • Organisation, Period, Key Achievements • Community Related Activities • Hobbies • References (with tel: numbers!!) • ENCL: Wizards are helpful but modify them appropriately!
Things to Watch out For • Attention to detail.. NO TYPOS!!!!!!!!!!!! • Consistency in dates • Sign your cover letters!!! • Avoid using Clichés • Let your letters be to the point with simple & sweet
Things to watch out for cont’d • Font size, type setting, smudges, • white out, pen marks etc. Remember-the CV gets you an interview not the JOB!!!!!
Background Stuff • Have a Career Dev’t file • Certificates, transcripts, CV’s, application letters sent out, network tracking sheets, articles from journals, clippings of ads, etc. • Screen jobs/assignments etc into: • Most suitable & desired • Desired but unsuitable • Suitable but undesired • Outliers
Before the Presentation/Interview • Rehearse!!!!!!!!!!! • List all possible questions you can be asked • Get a friend to interview you or listen to your presentation to critique • Make notes of your strong & weak points • List sensible questions you can ask or anticipate will be asked • Practice your posture, timing, animations etc. • Research the topic/company eg best practice, revolutionary trends, products, scope of operations, competitors, share price etc. • Select clear font and design layout. • Don’t crowd your slides
During The Presentation/Interview • Be Punctual • Dress code • Confidence level (assertiveness-the new buzz word) • Posture • Smile • Use of analogies, stories, illustrations, statistics
BODY LANGUAGE: AT BEST & AT WORST • At their Best: - They add emphasis - They illustrate - They help the other person visualize - They create rapport - They match the words • At their worst - They are distracting - They create confusion when not matched with words. - They reveal your nervous energy - make you appear unauthentic or less than capable
BODY LANGUAGE BODY LANGUAGE: WHAT TO AVOID • Pointing at the person • Making jerky movements • Playing with anything (e.g. clicking of pen) • Repeating a gesture many a time.
