  3. Reader’s Workshop 2nd Grade Readers Will… • Develop lifelong reading habits. • Make their own reading choices based upon their interests. • Respond to the books they read and share their reading with others. • Apply strategies that support decoding , fluency, and comprehension.

  4. Reader’s Workshop • Units are subject to change based on student needs throughout the year.

  5. Writer’s Workshop 2nd Grade Writers Will… • Develop lifelong writing habits and share work with others. • Develop their own ideas for writing within different genres. • Understand and apply each phase of the writing process. • Apply knowledge of language structure, conventions, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss writing.

  6. Writer’s Workshop • Units are subject to change based on student needs throughout the year.

  7. Word Work • We focus on word work as an approach to spelling. • notice spelling patterns • build single-syllable and multi-syllable words • rhyme • make connections between reading and writing • Writer’s Workshop • incorporate word work groups to improve their writing so that they can share it with others. • meet with groups at least 2 times a week to monitor growth.

  8. Math Workshop 2nd Grade Mathematicians will… • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Understand the connections and relationships that exist between money, linear measurement, time, counting, and math in our world. • Understand place value, number relationships, and how to have a mathematical conversation. • Understand how relationships between numbers help them add and subtract fluently within 1,000. • Master addition and subtraction facts within 20

Project Work • Looks different in any classroom and in any grade • K/1 has free choice and more flexibility • 2nd- 7th grade has more content which lends itself to teacher started but kid driven • It can start… • From a child’s interest • From a question • From content (teacher provocation) • It is all supported by inquiry • Each class will have at least 2 projects per year • Abby Bucher, our pedagogista, and Dustin McKinney, our atelierista, support teachers in this area

  11. Homework in 2nd Grade • We will use a TEAM homework approach. • Each week, your child will have nightly reading log and a list of homework options. • Each activity completed will earn your child one star. The more activities completed, the more stars earned. • At the end of each week, your child will need to return the list of homework options with his or her stars totaled with a parent signature. • As a class, we will add the stars to get our class TEAM total to see if we have earned a reward.

  12. Testing in Second Grade • Dibels/TRC • Dibels – is phonics/phonemic awareness • Text Reading Comprehension (TRC) - gives students a reading level based on fluency, accuracy, and comprehension • Math • District Comprehensive Math Assessment – Will be given at the beginning, middle, and end of the year • Practice and monitor fact fluency weekly.

  13. Communication • Report cards four times a year • Narrative with the report card at the end of each semester • PIT Day (Parents in Touch) is September 26th • We are open to communicating and building strong relationships with families. We will do our best to respond to you within 24 hours.
