  1. How our opening sequence used and challenged conventions, and how does it represent social groups  and issues? Ailsa McIntyre

  2. Genre convention Genre conventions are story elements included in the film that has been created. These can be things such as archetypes, key events and specific genres and the audiences expectations.

  3. WHAT GENRE HAVE YOU MADE, AND WHAT ARE GENRE CONVENTIONS? Within our opening sequence we used a range of genre conventions to heighten our genre aim to the max.

  4. WHAT FILMS (OTHER PRODUCTS) ARE YOU COMPARING TO? KNIVES OUT SEVEN WIND RIVER

  5. WIND RIVER

  6. Editing The editing of both extracts includes several montage clips of different view points and objects which shows different aspects of the film and what it includes. Gives the audience an insight and sneak peaks into what is about to come.

  7. Camera work Seven Dearest Annabelle Camera work: the use of the over the shoulder shot in both extract links with the question of why and what are they both running from. Both extracts show a female archertype running, one in the woods and one in the middle of snowy mountains.

  8. Mise en scene • Mise en scene: the colour blue in used on both of the womens outfits, the colour blue connotes non threating and calm which implies they aren’t the harmful characters within the horror genre. It makes them stand out and show their femininity through pops of colour.

  9. Knives out Budget - 40 million USD 311.4 million USD made in box office Daniel criag A list actor

  10. Mise en scene Mise en scene – both male archetype are shown in smart, suits. It reflects the representation of the extracts class and potential wealth of the men. It shows them in a sophisticated manner and shows dominance As well as this, the colour scheme in both extracts are similar in the sense of warm tones and tons of emerald green and warm orange/yellow colour schemes. -

  11. Camera work the close up shot of drugs signifies that the use of drugs links with the illegal activity that may be involved in the extracts eg death of someone, murder? The close up shot of drugs makes the audience question who is using the drugs and why they are shown to the audience, there must be a reasoning behind it.

  12. Sound • The non diegetic sound used in knives out is very upbeat and musical, which links with the genre of action and a lot going on. Similarly, the use of non diegetic sound in dearest Annabelle is tense and more mysterious which again implies something is going to happen and builds suspense

  13. Editing In dearest Annabelle the external shots, are long takes of running through the woods. In knives out the same long shots are used. Long shots allow the audience a wide insight into the storyline of the film to come. The use of zoom shots in both extracts draws the audience focuses of certain aspects which implies the director is doing that on purpose and for a reason they may be revealed in the wider film

  14. CHARACTER INTROUCTION The film ‘Eden lake’ which is a extreme horror, has similarities to our opening sequence of dearest Annabelle. In one of the scenes where a women is seen running away, it is similar to our external scene at the beginning. In dearest Annabelle the girl is more jolly and playful, whereas in Eden lake she is running away to save her life. Ironically, the two are comparable in their dresses and blonde short hair.

  15. Narrative + title choices The film ‘Dearest Jane’ is similar to ours ‘Dearest Annabelle’. The two names being similar links to the idea of the names being part of the main characters and a message is wanted for them. Its very characters focus, in ours it’s a message from the father to the daughter who is missing The reasoning to our narrative was to engage the audience in an exciting and period piece genre that was different and unique. We wanted to develop our storyline through a title sequence

  16. The things we challenged 2. Challenged it by having tension being within a fairytale beginning 1. No dialogue in our opening sequences so had to make it eye catching and keep the audience entertained 3. Trying to give away hints but not too much in the opening sequences, keeps audiences intrigued

  17. Representation AGE PARENTAL ROLE Class/time • Our opening sequences representation is is similar to the movie I compared previously, Knives out. Within that extract is many older male characters. It implies the idea of the man having status than the women involved. In our opening sequence the man has high status and is of older age. • We represented age through mise en scene of the male archetype wearing smart suits and used close up camera shots to exposure their facial expressions of being serious and focused. • Dearest Annabelle includes father daughter relationship. we represented parental role through camera work of a extreme close up shot of the daughters eye, then match cut editing it with the same extreme close up of the fathers eyes. - Dearests Annabelle is a time period that has aspects of middle class. Seven the film includes the same aspects. Seven was filmed in 1995 so it has the older feel to it which is what we tried to portray. As well as that, the costumes, house and interior are all of a middle class family background

  18. Adhered or subverted stereotypes SUBVERTED STEROTYPES • Costume period piece subverted the stereotype of horror conventions as it doesn’t fit the horror, scary and dark theme. ADHERED • Teddy bear shot adhered to the conventions of horror • Drug close up shot • rocking chair – creepy
