Boom box The boombox quickly became associated with urban society, particularly African American and Hispanic youth. Towards the end of the 1970s and throughout the 1980s every typical city kid had their own box. Many carried their boomboxes everywhere they went, holding them on top of their shoulders while walking down the street, playing their music loud for everyone to hear. People used their boomboxes to spread their ideas; cassettes were traded and shared among those open to the music, and played as loud as possible out of the box for those who didn’t want to hear what they had to say. The wide use of boomboxes in urban communities led to the boombox being coined a “ghetto blaster”, a nickname which was soon used as part of a backlash against the boombox and hip hop culture. Cities began banning boomboxes from public places and they became less and less acceptable on city streets.
Shoulder Pads Defining fashion statement of the era, and known as power dressing .Every garment from the brassiere upwards would come with its own set of shoulder pads. To prevent excessive shoulder padding, velcro was sewn onto the pads so that the wearer could choose how many sets to wear. By the end of the era, some shoulder pads were the size of dinner plates. And now still used frequently to extenuate the shoulders of a jacket or a dress as a part of a trend. Worn by Victoria Beckham
