Will Hobbs Biography • Grew up in Air Force family so moved around a lot – books became his best friends • When in Alaska loved mountains, fishing, baseball and books • Two older brothers, one younger sister and one younger brother • Then moved to CA and backpacked in mountains a lot and still does today –loves outdoors and animals

More… • Went to college at Stanford in CA (and spent summers as guide at Boy Scout camp Philmont in NM) before becoming English teacher • Moved to Durango, CO where met wife Jean and both backpack and go whitewater rafting – house at edge of wildlife preserve • Read so much decided he wanted to try writing a good story – half ideas come from own experience and rest from reading and research

First book wrote was Bearstone, first book published was Changes in Latitude Says writing takes practice and dedication and patience due to all revising – usually one book/year with 3 drafts Big breakthrough when learned to write with all five senses so reader could see, hear, taste, touch, and smell what characters experience More…

  5. More… • Wants to give readers a good story, but also inspire love of natural world • Writes picture and chapter books (many WAW nominees) • Far North used to be favorite book, now Crossing the Wire • Hope you will check out his books and teachers will read in class
