  1. The Solar System Earth and Space Science Class 5th Grade By Michele Sabo

  2. Purpose and Objectives of this Assignment Purpose: To cover the following ODE Academic Content Standards Objectives to learn: • The solar system includes the sun and all celestial bodies that orbit the sun. Each planet in the solar system has unique characteristics. • The sun is one of many stars that exist in the universe. • Most of the cycles and patterns of motion between the Earth and sun are predictable.

  3. STOPEM • Subject: Fifth Grade Earth and Space Science • Topic: The Solar System • Objectives: The students will know… • The solar system includes the sun and all celestial bodies that orbit the sun. Each planet in the solar system has unique characteristics. • The sun is one of many stars that exist in the universe. • Most of the cycles and patterns of motion between the Earth and sun are predictable. • Procedures: The teacher will lecture using the Power Point, and the student will learn the content with a follow up quiz • Evaluations: The student will have a short quiz following the Power Point • Materials: Power Point visual aid and follow up quiz

  4. There are 8 Major Planets • There are 8 major planers in our solar system that orbit the sun. • Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune • Some of the planets have a moon or moons that orbit them. • Earth is a planet that has a moon that orbits it. • The planets orbits are because of their gravitational attraction to the sun. • Moons orbit around planets because of their gravitational attraction to the planets. • Acronym to use: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles

  5. Asteroids are metallic, rocky bodies that orbit the sun but are too small to be classified as a planet. • A meteor appears when a particle or chunk of metallic or stony matter called a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere from outer space. • Comets are a mixture of ices (both water and frozen gases) that are not part of a planet. • Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet

  6. The Sun • The sun is the closest star to the Earth • The sun is a medium-sized star and is the only star in our solar system. • There are many other stars of different sizes in the universe. • Because they are so far away, they do not appear as large as the sun. • The sun appears to be the largest star in the sky because it is the closest star to Earth. • Some stars are larger than the sun and some stars are smaller than the sun.

  7. Earth’s relationship to the Sun • Most of the cycles and patterns of motion between the Earth and sun are predictable. • Earth’s revolution around the sun takes approximately 365 days • Earth completes one rotation on its axis in a 24-hour period, producing day and night • This rotation makes the sun, stars and moon appear to change position in the sky. • Earth’s axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5° • This tilt, along with Earth’s revolution around the sun, affects the amount of direct sunlight that the Earth receives in a single day and throughout the year. • The average daily temperature is related to the amount of direct sunlight received. • Changes in average temperature throughout the year are identified as seasons. • The amount of direct sunlight that Earth receives is related to the altitude of the sun, which affects the angle of the sun’s rays, and the amount of time the sun is above the horizon each day. • Different regions around the world have seasonal changes that are not based solely on average temperature (e.g., rainy season, dry season, monsoon season).

  8. Quiz follow up Questions There will now be a short quiz to assess your knowledge on Earth and the Solar System

  9. Question #1 What are the names of the 8 major planets in our Solar System in order? Mars, Venus, Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Neptune, Uranus, Venus

  10. Sorry Try Again Try to remember the Acronym My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles

  11. Correct! The 8 major planets in our Solar System in order are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune

  12. Question #2 True or False? The Sun is the only star in our Solar System True False

  13. Sorry Try Again Remember the question is just about our Solar System, not the entire Universe!

  14. Correct! The Sun is the only star in our Solar System however there are many other stars in the Universe!

  15. Question #3 Earth’s revolution around the sun takes approximately how many days? 24 248 365 7

  16. Sorry Try Again Remember the Earth rotates around the Sun completely in one whole year!

  17. Correct! The Earth takes 365 days to orbit the Sun!

  18. Congratulations! You have now successfully learned the ODE 5th grade standards about the Solar System!
