  1. 9/23/14 Distributing & Combining DO NOW Write the following exponents 1). 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 2). Y x Y x Y x Y x Y 3). 8 x A x A x A Solve the following exponents: 4). 23 5). 43 6). 92

  2. What are we doing Today OBJECTIVE:WE WILL be able to combine and distribute expressions ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDINGS: Math problems that look hard will be easy if we follow the steps needed to solve it! AP

  3. Procedure for Combining Its Easy 1). You can only combine similar terms: integers with integers, variables with the same variables. Ex:YES: 7 + 4, X + X, X2 + X2, XY + XY NO: X + 7, X + X2, XY + XY2 2). Watch the signs! Remember like terms add to a larger sum than the largest term! Unlike to a smaller! AP

  4. Procedure for Distribution Its Easy 1). Draw the arrows from the term outside the parentheses to the inside 2). Watch the signs! Same signs = positive; Different signs = negative 3). Bring down the operations inside the parentheses AP

  5. Using the Whiteboards 1). I will put a problem on the smartboard. Do the problem in your notebook. 2). When you have an answer, write it on your board but DO NOT show anyone. 3). On my command hold up your board for me to see. 4). Best scores will get a prize AP

  6. Problem 1 : Combining 1). 6x + 8x + 3x + 2 = AP

  7. Problem 2 : Combining 2). 4R + 3 – 2R + 6 = AP

  8. Problem 3 : Combining 3). 2F – F + 4 + 6F = AP

  9. Problem 4 : Combining 4). 2 + T2 + 2T2 + T = AP

  10. Problem 5 : Distributing 5). 3(X + 6) = AP

  11. Problem 6 : Distributing 6). 7+ -4(Y – 3) = HINT: Combine Integers! Watch the signs! AP

  12. Problem 7 : Distributing 7). 3 + X(X + 2Y) = AP

  13. Problem 8 : Distributing 8). 4 – X(Y – X + 2) = AP

  14. Problem 9 : Distributing & Combining 9). 6(4 + Y) – 3(Y + 3) = AP

  15. Problem 10 : Distributing & Combining 10) 6 + X(-2 + X) – 4 (3 + X) = AP
