  2. It is great to be aware of a handful of tips to prepare shiitake logs to grow and harvest mushrooms at your backyard. Shiitake mushrooms are a delicious and truly nutritious addition to any meal. The process of growing them at home on shiitake logs is a fun-filled activity. It is an easy way to enjoy a steady supply of fresh mushrooms. In this article, there is a general overview of the process of preparing shiitake logs.

  3. Selecting a suitable wood The first step in preparing productive shiitake logs is to select the right type of wood, and in this regard you may consult an expert shiitake log manufacturer. Shiitake mushrooms grow best on hardwoods. Some examples are oak, beech, and alder. You should avoid pine and cedar. They can contain compounds that inhibit mushroom growth. Once you have selected the right type of wood, it's crucial to cut it to the right size. Shiitake logs should be 4-6 inches in diameter. Also, they should be precisely 3-4 feet long. It is the optimal size for mushroom growth.

  4. Drilling holes on the logs Next, the shiitake logs need to be carefully drilled with holes, and it can be done in a reliable shiitake log factory. These holes will serve as the locations for the mushroom spores or spawn to be placed. The spacing and size of these holes will depend a lot on the spawn you are using. In most cases, a typical spacing is about 6 inches apart. The hole’s size is about 1/4 inch. The depth of each hole should be 1-1.5 inch, to ensuring that the spawn are well-protected from exterior elements.

  5. Inoculation Once the logs have been drilled, they need to be inoculated with spawn. You can do it by inserting the spawn into the holes using a standard small mallet. It's important to be sure that the spores or spawn are pressed firmly into the holes, to ensure good contact with the wood. After inoculation, the logs need to be sealed to protect the spores or spawn from drying out and to prevent contamination from other microorganisms. You can do it using wax, or paraffin.

  6. Placing it in a maintained shaded location The next step is placing the log in a specific location where it will receive appropriate amount of moisture and shade. A shaded area with good air circulation is ideal. The log should be placed on a bed of sawdust or straw to keep them off the ground and promote good drainage. Encouraging fruiting At the end of the incubation period, you can consider encouraging fruiting by providing a typical heavy soaking (it lasts many hours of immersion). After 7 to 14 days, you should see small, button-like mushrooms appearing on the surface of the logs. These mushrooms will continue to grow. They will mature over the course of several days.

  7. Harvesting the mushrooms from the logs Harvesting the mushrooms can be done when you gently twist them off the shiitake logs using your fingers. The mushrooms should be used or preserved as soon as possible, as they will begin to degrade soon after they are harvested.
