  1. The Western Word Feb 27, 2008 Nobody wins in the game of blame When things go wrong, often the first response is to implicate the people behind the situation. While proper accountability is an important part of our organization, we often get tripped up looking for the guilty party instead of actually fixing the problem. There is little to be gained by engaging in the unnecessary criticism of your predecessor, another facility, or the previous tour. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter whose fault it is. What matters is whose responsibility it is. The problem isn’t “theirs” – it’s “ours.” We live in a world that thrives on finding mistakes instead of creating solutions. If you must affix blame, then do so with a resolution in the other hand. It is my desire to create a culture that focuses less on the “gotcha” and more on the “let’s work on it together.” “‘But’ is a fence over which few leap.” -- German proverb We need this kind of teamwork in order to confront the challenges that lie before us. Sylvester Black, VP Western Area Operations

  9. Feb 27, 2008 The fruit of your labor The ascension of assumption All PCES and EAS employees with direct deposit (net-to-bank) are now able to access their earnings statements online. This capability allows employees to view and print a copy of an online earnings statement for up to the previous 29 pay periods. Statements will also continue to be mailed to the address of record. Those employees who receive a hardcopy check will not be able to access their earnings statements online. They will continue to receive their earnings statements with their hardcopy check. • One of the greatest failures in relationships is assumption. We presume to know feelings, expectations and intent. • This carries over to our workplace. Managers should never assume that every employee is on board. Ask yourself these questions and answer them honestly. • Does the employee fully understand the job requirements? • Does the employee understand the expectations? • Do they have the proper training and resources? • Is the employee aware when your expectations and their performance are not aligned? • What is the management contribution to persistent problems? • ** Adapted from Communication Briefings, August 2007 Online earnings statements are available on LiteBlue no later than close-of-business on Wednesday after the pay period ends. Employees will be required to enter their Employee Identification Number (EIN) and USPS Personal Identification Number (PIN) to log on to LiteBlue where they can choose the ePayroll link. Rural Delivery foundations Quick Tip All rural street inspections must be completed by the last day of the rural count, March 7, 2008. Lisa Weber
