  1. Sganarelle, personnage comique créé par Molière, dont il fut la seconde incarnation comme acteur. Il avait été Mascarille dans ses trois premières pièces; la quatrième fut Sganarelle ou le Cocu imaginaire (ci-dessous), dont il modifia quatre fois le type : tuteur dans dansl'Ecole des maris, valet de Don Juan dans le Festin de Pierrepère dans l'Amour médecin, fagotier dans le Médecin malgré lui. • Molière paraît avoir formé le costume de ses Sganarelle d'après celui de Scaramouche, moins la couleur : justaucorps, haut-de-chausse, béret et manteau, tantôt cramoisi, tantôt musc, tantôt jaune et vert. Le nom de Sganarelle, l'étymologie italienne, signifie détrompé, et c'est par une altération bizarre dans le langage populaire, Sganarelle est devenu le synonyme de trompé.. • http://www.cosmovisions.com/textSganarelle.htm
