  1. Particles and Fields Package Monthly Status Review (MSR) November 17, 2010 Dave Curtis, PFP PM

  2. SSL Contracting Status Phase B/C/D Contract in place. An updated spending plan (phasing) has been completed

  3. Schedule Status No improvement in pre-CDR schedule A few layouts lagging SWIA/STATIC mechanical still behind but making slow progress Due to personnel conflicts with RBSP RBSP FM2 completes environments this week! See next chart Result is the EM system testing completes right about the time of the ICDR. EM Test completion current showing June 3, after Instrument CDR. Can reorganize test schedule to prioritize retiring risk early (Before ICDR) Package I&T before SWIA/STATIC Calibrations

  4. Manpower • Concern with competition with RBSP-EFW for some key people • Power converter design team • Reorganized team to streamline priority tasks • Significant progress this month – most converter layouts complete • SWIA/STATIC/LPW boom mechanical engineers • SWIA/STATIC EM mechanical parts behind • Now of critical path to EM I&T • Looking at hiring outside help to accelerate parts drawings • FSW lead • keeping ahead of MAVEN schedule • Additional parts engineer to be added to QA team • New hire: Interviewing.

  5. Accomplishments Almost all EM EEE parts at SSL 3 part types late – looking at work-arounds First preliminary parts SEL test preliminary results look good PWBs are in layout >50% layouts complete, some boards being loaded (see below) Most EM Mechanical parts are in fab Some part-level design work still in progress on SWIA/STATIC PFP FSW Boot code 93% coded All except Safe Mode/Zone Alert system operational code started Heater sizing analysis complete Will need to submit a CCR to cover operational heater power for SEP, SWEA, SWIA, STATIC More in instrument sections…

  22. SWEA Status - CESR • Mechanical • EM sensor assembled, initial functional tests show good performance • Starting fab of FM electronics housing • Fab of FM sensor pending completion & review of EM functional tests • Front-end Electronics (MCP, HVPS) • Transformers fab & test – expect to be complete by Nov. 19. • Planetary Protection/AIV procedures in place – clean room testing underway EM sensor in vacuum chamber

  23. SWEA Status - SSL • Pedestal Mechanical • Fabrication in progress. Expect delivery mid-November. • Solar absorber will not be used. • Absorber would radiate in shadow and drive the temperature too low. Instead, SWEA will use heater power to maintain temperature [pending final thermal analysis]. • LVPC • Layout complete. • Digital • Layout complete, board is routed, currently under review at SSL. • Expect to make gerbers and send fab out for quote week of Nov. 15.

  24. Surface Coating for Deflectors, Grids, and External Surfaces Black nickel (electroless) has been selected Good thermal properties (a ~ 0.83, e ~ 0.5) Electrically conducting Non-magnetic: < 10 nT @ 10 cm (< 0.01 nT @ 1 meter) after exposure to ~1000-G field Durable and easy to handle Not significantly altered by exposure to atomic oxygen (> 4 yrs equivalent in Mars environment with MAVEN orbit, including deep dips) Mechanical Design of Aperture Existing SWEA design meets the load requirements. FM fabrication can proceed Two Key SWEA Issues Are Resolved

  25. MAVEN PFP STATIC Status October 2010 Jim McFadden, STATIC Lead

  26. STATIC Accomplishments EM Anode fabricated Preamp and TDC board signal routing complete (Hatch), External-to-internal custom HV connectors (for deflectors) were designed allowing sweep board layout modifications to proceed. Sweep HV board mods identified (Tiu) that stabilize the sweep. LVPS EM boards were fabricated and are in house. Finished the mounting design between analyzer and anode including updated nitrogen purge connection. New carbon foils received and initial test shows they do not have the breakage problems seen in previous batch Manufacturer admits they missed a step in the first batch Carbon foil carriers with grids inspected and documented. Equipment ordered for streamlining carbon foil attachment MCP gain test equipment (preamps, MCA) ordered Ion gun quote received

  27. STATIC Open Issues Preamp and TDC boards schematic verification and fab preparation in process (Dalen). HV Sweep layout needs mods to accommodate external-to-internal HV connectors, and part changes to stabilize the sweep. LVPS needs BOM and needs to be kitted, built and tested (Berg). 15kV HV board needs to be kitted -- waiting on some parts from VMI and a custom HV connectors from the MEs. Digital board in layout. Parts drawings required for acoustics test in process (Johnson). STATIC FPGA still in development Still not getting much ME time on STATIC due to RBSP -- analyzer and mechanical attenuator still in development New vacuum calibration chamber not be ready for MCP testing so an older chamber will be readied and another chamber refurbished.
