  1. Particles and Fields Package (PFP) SWEA pre-CDR Peer Review Integration with PFP, Qualification, ATLO 2011 March 28 Dave Curtis

  2. SWEA I&T Plans SWEA Sensor delivered to SSL ~12/2012 Will have been calibrated at IRAP SWEA Integrated with SSL electronics Functional Test (CPT) Interface verifications Chamber tests to verify no change in performance, sweeping modes Integration with PFP PFP CPT EMC Test with PFP Remainder of environmental tests separate PFP reintegrated, final CPT Delivered to ATLO Integrated onto Spacecraft Observatory level CPT, Environments Shipped to KSC; Launch

  3. PFP Verification PFP Verification Plan MAVEN_PF_SYS_023 PFP Verification Matrix, MAVEN_PF_SYS_033 Maps requirements to verification tests FRD, ERD, ICD Requirements Most SWEA Performance Requirements in the FRD verified during SWEA Instrument Calibrations ERD requirements verified during Environmental Tests

  4. PFP Integration PFP I&T Plan MAVEN_PF_SYS_022 Bring together all of the PFP Flight Units after instrument calibrations but before qualification starts A similar integration of Engineering Models is taking place now A big difference between EM and FM PFP Integration is Flight Software Build 1 for EM has very little instrument data processing Build 2 for FM will have all code Build 2 will have been tested on EM prior to loading on FM FM PFP Integration will take place in a clean room with Contamination & Planetary protection controls Class 100K or better Purged with LN2 boil-off Dust cover will remain on as much as possible Will perform a baseline CPT test of the full package Package CPT includes all Instrument CPTs, modified as required Covers all functions and modes of operation to the extent possible Will perform a self compatibility test of the package Verify instruments do not interact unexpectedly (noise)

  5. PFP I&T Flow

  6. Qualification Following PFP I&T there will be a Pre-Environmental Review Verify assembly and test is complete Verify test plans are in place and meet requirements First Qualification test is EMC Performed at the package level Uses flight and flight-like harnesses RE, RS, CE, CS At a local subcontractor Following EMC SWEA will be de-integrated from the PFP and go through remaining environments at the instrument level Magnetics, Vibration, Thermal Vac at ERD levels Following instrument qualification the PFP shall be reassembled for a final CPT at SSL A pre-ship review shall be help before shipping to ATLO

  7. PFP Qualification Flow

  8. SSL Integration and Test Facilities Cleanroom (with 5 THEMIS probes) One of 5 Thermal Vac chambers at SSL Magnetics Screening Station One of 3 calibration chambers at SSL

  9. EMC Tests Levels per ERD: Radiated Emissions RE102 Radiated Susceptibility RS103 Conducted Emissions CE101/102 Conducted Susceptibility CS101, CS115

  10. SWEA Magnetics Test Measure the powered off dipole Target is 25mA-m2 STEREO SWEA was measured to be close to this value Measure power on/off and transient and AC fields STEREO SWEA was unmeasureable Use SSL Magnetics screening facility

  11. SWEA Dynamics Structural Loads by Analysis Pressure Profile by rule-of-thumb Self-shock by opening cover twice Spacecraft shock deferred to ATLO Acoustics Deferred to ATLO Protoflight Random Vibration 12.8GRMS, 3 axes, 2 minutes/axis Local contractor

  12. SWEA Thermal Vac SSL Facilities 5 chambers available with various configurations Thermal Balance depending on results of thermal analysis Current plan calls for SWEA Thermal Balance, TBR 8 cycles per ERD and GEVS to predicts/AFT +/-10C For SWEA -30 to +50 ºC Op and Survival CPT hot and cold first cycle; LPT thereafter Nominally separate due to different environments But may consider combining some tests if ranges compatible Last cycle followed by bakeout with TQCM to verify outgassing

  13. Thermal Vac Cycling

  14. ATLO Assembly, Test, and Launch Operations Takes place at Lockheed Martin in Denver and Kennedy Space Center in Florida As for STEREO, SSL will take the lead during ATLO IRAP will be consulted for any anomaly of the SWEA sensor SWEA will be removed after spacecraft environments and returned to SSL for a functional test in vacuum to verify no damage occurred.

  15. SWEA in ATLO SWEA will be kept purged throughout Short (few hour) interruptions allowed Purged through L+0 99.999% pure, < 3 ppm water, <0.5 ppm total hydrocarbons 5 L/hr SWEA Dust Cover shall remain installed as much as possible to protect the grids Removed only in a 100K or better clean area or bagged Removed for environments Removed at encapsulation SWEA 1-time cover shall remain closed during ATLO Except short test of actuator circuit in clean room Except thermal vac SSL personnel will re-close SWEA HV may be powered in spacecraft thermal vac

  16. Post-Launch PFP powered on a few weeks after launch for Commissioning SSL personnel will control & monitor PFP SWEA cover will be opened and HV will be powered up SWEA boom will not be deployed till after Mare Orbit Insertion SWEA will be left on for much of Cruise, through with limited telemetry Early Cruise is not sun-pointed, so SWEA will be Sunlit PFP will be powered off for MOI PFP will be powered back on during Transition SWEA Boom gets deployed SWEA HV back on

  17. SWEA Operations SWEA remains on throughout Science Mission Off during Spacecraft Safe events Off during Relay Operations if it interferes with Electra May be off during Telecom if power is limited SWEA HV will likely be powered off during deep dips Protect against HV discharge when Density gets high LM & SOC will monitor PFP State Of Health (housekeeping) SSL will monitor SWEA Science Telemetry Maintain MCP HV adjustment IRAP will get PFP telemetry products as soon as they are available to the PFP team LM & SOC will send orbit phase commands to PFDPU SSL will maintain command sequences that respond to orbit phase commands to configure SWEA mostly averaging and energy resolution adjustments near periapsis
