  4. Revelation of the Son through Signs • Only eight miracles of Jesus are revealed • Each demonstrate a spiritual truth about what he will accomplish • These signs are meant to provoke response from hearers

  5. Revelation of the Son through Signs • Signs: • 1. Water into wine, John 2:1-11 • Symbolic of the “Messianic Banquet” – new age of salvation (John 2:11) • Symbolically announces that God’s end-times salvation has arrived • Old Jewish ritual is now replaced by new wine of messianic banquet with John as the bridegroom • John 3:25-30

Food for Thought • John 5:17-18 • God is continually working • Christ’s proclamation leads to provocation of the Jews • John presents the most exalted Christology in the New Testament among the four Gospels • In contrast, Synoptics place great emphasis on Jesus’ calling/training the Twelve, sending them out as apostles to preach and to heal
