Act One

Scene One
  • Guards and Horatio see a ghost who they believe is King Hamlet
  • The guards have seen it before, but it has never spoken
  • Horatio – who is educated – believes this is a bad sign for Denmark

  • There have been stricter schedules for guards at the castle
  • Denmark has been producing and importing more weapons, and building many ships
  • This is because young Fortinbras may attack Denmark now that King Hamlet is dead
  • The guards believe this is why King Hamlet is haunting the castle
  • The ghost returns and Horatio tries to get it to speak, but day breaks and it leaves
  • Horatio decides they need to tell Hamlet

Scene Two
  • Claudius explains his reasons for marrying Gertrude and that he has been threatened by young Fortinbras
  • Claudius is sending a letter to Fortinbras’s uncle – who is in charge of the country – telling him about his nephew’s plans
  • Laertes is leaving for France
  • Gertrude and Claudius want Hamlet to stop grieving and stay in Denmark to help Claudius rule instead of returning to school

  • Hamlet is miserable and believes that his mother is not grieving enough for his father
  • However, he agrees to stay in Denmark
  • He reminisces about his father and it is clear that he idolizes him

  • Horatio tells Hamlet about the ghost of his father
  • Hamlets decides that he will stand guard tonight to see if this is true for himself
  • Hamlet also believes this is a bad omen for them
  • Hamlet asks the guards and Horatio to keep this a secret
    • 2 parts
      • 1. Do not tell anyone you saw a ghost
      • 2. Do not tell anyone Hamlet is going to stand guard
