The Third Segment: The large government built projects sponsored by king Herod
King Herold employed laborers by commissioning public works such as building temples palaces and stadiums
The upper class was made up of the temple priests and priestly aristocracy
The middle class was completed by traders and merchants, artisans and craftsmen and teachers and scribes were also part of the middle class
The roman government required heavy taxation. Tax collectors were local employees considered to be outcasts and traders.
Jews were also required to give sacrifices to the temple – sometimes in the form of money and usually by purchasing sacrificial animals to the priests.
Teachers who travelled made their living by accepting gifts from those who came to hear them in various towns
In the first century temple courtyards became a market place were local merchants would sell sacrificial animals at excessive costs in order to make a profit.
