  2. What is Absenteeism & Tardiness? • Absenteeism- Habitual failure to appear, especially for work or other regular duty. • Tardiness- Occurring, arriving, acting, or done after the scheduled, expected, or usual time; late.

  3. Arising Problems • More work for employees who do show up on time. This leads to dissatisfaction throughout the workplace. • Decreases productivity and motivation. • Lose customers due to poor work ethic. • Company loses money due to overtime of other employees. • Domino Effect

  4. Overview to Decrease the Problems • Establish clear policy • Distribute policy to all employees • Schedule meetings with known offenders • Offer rewards • Enforce policy

  5. Establish Clear Policy • Employees need to know there are penalties for tardiness and absenteeism • Set up logical penalties that worsen in severity for more than one offence • Yearly meeting to explain the policy to staff • All employees sign the record of the employee tardiness reviews.

  6. Distribute Policy • Distribute policy to all employees • Post in a common area where clearly visible • Schedule meetings to discuss new policy and answer questions employees may have • Avoid singling anyone out during meeting

  7. Schedule Meetings With Known Offenders • Meetings must have a positive tone and be conducted in private setting • Inform the employee that their behavior is unacceptable and they will face repercussions if it continues • Find out if there is a reason they are chronically late or absent • Find a way to work with them if they have an honest and valid reason

  8. Offer Rewards • Offer rewards to employees who are on time and show up for work • Once an employee reaches 30 consecutive days of being on time and present everyday, give them a gift card • Reward the entire staff with free lunch if everyone is on time and present • This incentive helps increase employee attendance and gives your staff the motivation to follow the new policy

  9. Enforce Policy • Enforce your policy swiftly • The policy will have no weight if you do not enforce it • Ask the employee to provide solutions to their chronic lateness • If there is no valid excuse for someone being late or absent, then you must deal with it according to your policy • Employee reviews for repeat offenders

  10. Managerial Challenges • Ranks as one of the highest management issues • Favoritism • Hard to punish top performing employees • Employees may misunderstand their unpunished tardiness.
