  2. January 1, 1886 Dear Journal, My name is Edward John Smith. I was told to write in this journal to store information so I will do so. I hope to write about my marriage if possible. I also hope to write about my children? Your writer, E. J. S.

  3. May 16, 1886 Dear Journal, I will tell you a little about when I went to school. I attended a school in Etruia. The school was supported by Wedge Wood Pottery Works. At the age of 12 I stopped attending and took up the family business. Your writer, E. J. S.

  4. January 13, 1887 Dear Journal, I am about to get married to my love Eleanor Pennington. We have decided to get married in Winwick at St. Oswald’s Church. The wedding ceremony will be wonderful. We have flowers everywhere. The flowers are roses and tulips. I wanted marigolds but Eleanor insisted on roses and tulips. I am wearing a smashing black tuxedo. I don’t know what Eleanor is wearing but I am sure it will be most beautiful. Most of my family is here. I’m so excited! Eleanor’s family is here as well. My mother and my father have just arrived. We have a great priest he has been at this church for 25 years. Eleanor thinks I should shave my beard for the occasion but I don’t think I will. If you would excuse me I must be off. Your writer, E.   5. Helen April 2, 1889 Dear Journal, My daughter Helen Melville Smith was just born. She is wonderful and beautiful. I will sleep well now knowing she is alive. She will bring joy to both Eleanor and I. Your writer, E. J. S.

  6. Automobile 1893 Dear Journal, I have just purchased my new automobile, a Model T Ford. It is phenomenal. It rides smooth unlike a horse. It is gas powered. It is simply smashing. I think it is almost as enjoyable as being at sea. Your writer, E. J. S.

  7. Majestic 1895 to 1904 Dear Journal, I have just started to skipper the Majestic, in the Boer War. She is a transport ship. She is beautiful. I am sure she will be a great help in this horrible war. Your writer, Capt. E. J. S.

  8. 1903 Dear Journal, The war will soon end. We have captured the enemy’s major city. The General believes we will our duties by the end of the next year. I pray he is right. Your writer, Capt. E. J. S.

  9. April 15, 1912 Dear Journal, My father has just passed away. I feel like my heart has split in two. To help me overcome my sorrows I will fulfill his duty to write in this journal My name is Helen Melville Smith… Your Writer’s beloved daughter. H. M. S.
