What is “crime?” • The Russian word for crime is преступление. • The whole word is read "pristyplenya." • The "pri" comes from the word "over" and "styp" is to step. • The Russian word for crime, therefore, (as Dostoevsky intended it in this novel) means to overstep. • Raskolnikov talks of extraordinary men overstepping laws and rules. Crime?
