Traffic Safety • When working next to a busy roadway, traffic safety is a big priority. • It is important to keep in mind: • Distracted Drivers • Road Conditions • Vehicle blind spots • Misc.
Distracted Drivers / Road Condition • Distracted driving and bad road conditions can often lead to vehicles unintentionally moving from the roadway and striking guard rails or pedestrians.
Distracted Drivers / Road Condition • Be sure to keep cadets behind guard rails or on the shoulder of the road as much as possible to avoid potential injuries.
Blind Spots • Many vehicles have blind spots that may cause them to be unable to see you on the side of the road.
Traffic Safety Attendant • It is a good idea to assign someone in your group to watch the road for potentially dangerous situations and to inform your group members of hazards.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) • When working on the side of the road and handling trash there are several PPE items that are important to use: • Safety Vest • Gloves • Sunglasses • Proper Clothing • Shoes
PPE Safety Vest Latex / Work Gloves • Your safety vest allows for you to be easily seen by motorists and to let them know that you are working on / near the roadway. • Latex / Work gloves keep your hands from touching garbage and other hazardous materials as well as offer protection from cuts.
PPE Continued… Sunglasses Clothing • It is very important to protect your eyes when exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. Sunblock should also be used in the same regard. • It is important to wear long pants with closed toe shoes so that you do not get scratched by vegetation or debris.it is also important to wear your safety vest.
Dangerous Items • There are many dangerous items that you may come across when cleaning up the side of a highway. Here are a few examples that show what to look for.
Sharp / Rusty Objects • Be sure to look out for sharp or rusty objects like glass or old pieces of metal.
Biological / Hazardous Items • Items of the bio hazardous nature should not be handled. Items include but are not limited to: Band-Aids or Bandages Road Kill Needles / Syringes Medication
Portable Drug Labs • Portable drug labs have been found on roadsides by many law enforcement agencies over the last few years and contain both explosive and toxic chemicals / gasses. Look out for bottles / containers that look like this:
Procedures • There are a few procedures that must be followed at an Adopt – a Highway event: • Stay with your group • Place full bags off of the roadway on the gravel shoulder. • Be careful when climbing in ditches. • Be responsible • Be aware of your actions and represent our organization well.
