  2. What is chemistry? Chemistry is the study of any natural material or chemical. Most chemists also study the reactions of chemicals and natural materials mixed with each other (more about reactions on the next page.)

  3. Reactions There are two kinds of chemical reactions I know of. They are : • Acid-base reactions • Reduction-oxidation reactions An example of an acid-base reaction is when you mix vinegar and baking soda and it fizzes. An example of a reduction-oxidation reaction is breathing.

  4. Types of chemicals There are many types of chemicals. I won’t name them all, but here are some examples: Water, table salt, borax, corn starch, white glue, vinegar, baking soda, food coloring, epson salt, sugar, flour, alum, calcium chloride, bromothymol blue pH indicator, phenolphthalein pH indicator, sodium hydroxide, glycerin, rock salt, sea salt, lemon juice, metamucil, milk of magnesia, dishwashing detergent, copper wire, galvanized nails, mineral oil, citric acid, vegetable oil, steel wool, iodine stain, unflavored gelatin, radium, polonium, soap, bones, carbon dioxide, air, gasoline oil and any type of medicine.

  5. Famous chemists • Marie Curie: discovered radium and polonium • Louis Pasteur: discovered the process of pasteurization and created vaccines for rabies and anthrax • John Dalton: identified and presented the atomic theory • George Washington Carver: promoted alternative crops to cotton such as peanuts, soy beans and sweet potatoes (he was never president) • Michael Faraday: is known for work with electrochemistry and electromagnetism • Alfred Nobel: invented dynamite • Rosalind Franklin: discovered the DNA structure

  6. More famous chemists • Robert Boyle: first modern chemist • Antonie Lavoisier: is father to modern chemistry • Linus Pauling: known for work with molecular biology and quantum chemistry • Dmitri Mendeleer: created the Table of Elements • Joseph Priestly: invented soda water

  7. Interview with Ed Adams: Retired Chemist • What chemicals make reactions? • Some make acid-base reactions. Other reactions are reduction-oxidation reactions. • How many years do you have to go to college to become a chemist? • Two – Twelve Years. Two will get you a job as a lab assistant. Twelve will give you a PhD degree and you can be a doctor. • What chemicals are in cleaning products? • Detergent and chelator • Do we have chemicals in our bodies, and, if so, which ones? • Yes, we have carbon dioxide, water, air, germs, bones and soap(those are only some). • What is an everyday chemist’s job like? • It depends on the area in chemistry. • What is the coolest part of being a chemist? • Teaching other people about chemistry. • What is the hardest part of being a chemist? • You must pay attention to details.

  8. Body chemicals We have a ton of chemicals in our bodies and here are some examples: • Carbon dioxide • Water • Air • Germs • Bones • Soap • Organs • Skin
