Expectations Of a Fifth Grader • Fifth Graders should: • Greet adults when they see them • Use appropriate voice in school • Use words to express their feelings • Raise their hands and wait to be called on • Work with and collaborate with peers • Read for 20 minutes independently • Complete homework with minimal help • Line up in line order without talking • Walk quietly in the hallway • Help keep our classroom neat • Be kind to all classmates • Be safe, be respectful, be responsible

Bywood Banner Behavior • This year at Bywood we are focusing on Bywood Banner Behaviors. • Bywood’s Banner Behaviors emphasize high expectations of behavior in various school environments (classroom, cafeteria, hallway, restroom, playground, math lab, nurse/office, arrival, and dismissal). • Throughout the year, as a class, we discuss, model, practice, and review what it means to be safe, be respectful, and be responsible in each of the areas listed above. • As we become proficient in each area, we earn a 100% certificate.

  4. Homework • There is homework every night Mon.-Thurs. • Students are expected to complete all homework every night-NO EXCUSES • Your child must read for 15 minutes every night! Please make sure you initial your child’s reading log each night.

Fluency • Fluency is how fast a child can read with good accuracy and expression • The faster and more accurately they can read, the better they can comprehend, and in turn, test scores go up • Fluency is practiced on a daily basis in class through choral reads, echo reads, listening/watching on the computer, and Reader’s Theater • Fluency is tested 3 times a year for the DIBELS test, 5 times a year for Theme Tests • WORK FLUENCY PRACTICE INTO YOUR ROUTINE AT HOME • January Goal: 120 WPM May Goal: 130 WPM

  13. For Your Information Behavior Please see the school wide discipline plan in your handbook. Bathroom breaks Students are permitted to use the bathroom anytime during the school day with the exception of when we are switching classes. Wednesday Folders Please review all materials and return the next morning. Birthdays We love to celebrate birthdays! You may send in a treat that does NOT require cutting. Lunch We have lunch at 10:55 Money - Please put all money in an envelope and label it.

  15. Report Cards and Conferences Conferences will be held twice a year. Parents must attend conferences to pick up report cards. Dates are: November 24th-26th April 13th-20th
