CARE FOR CAREGIVERS Program Goals/Objectives: • Provide a series of free home visits by professional artists to “stressed out” unpaid family caregivers, individualized to suit their interests • Encourage caregivers to build skills in creative writing, visual arts, music or movement to use on their own after program has ended • Establish the arts as an effective tool in learning to manage and enjoy respite from the stress of long term caregiving • Use the arts to help caregivers relieve depression and see themselves as more than “caregiving machines”

  3. Artist worked with Caregiver to create portrait of the Care Recipient while teaching design and drawing techniques.

  4. Artist drew portrait from an old family photograph of Caregiver’s parents while teaching pastel techniques

  5. In Conclusion: • Using the arts as a healing tool is not new. Using the arts as a technique to help relieve the stress and depression of family caregivers in their own homes is. • Using the arts as a healing tool is a creative and effective remedy in a tragically common family situation. • Family caregivers sacrifice much to keep their aging loved ones out of publicly funded residential care. They deserve our support. • Union County was awarded a 2004 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for this innovative program. The NACo Award Program recognizes counties for improving the management and services provided by county government.
