  1. APPG Equalities: UK Mid Term Report 2014 under the Universal Periodic Review Tuesday 3 February 2015

  2. UN Human Rights and the UK As one of the UN’s 193 Member States, the UK must report to the UN under seven human rights treaties, two optional protocols and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process usually every four years. The UPR provides a peer review process within the UN, whereby States can question each other and make recommendations on any human rights issue. The UPR is therefore an important mechanism for promoting continual improvement of human rights.

  3. Universal Periodic Review (UPR) The UK was last examined under the UPR in 2012, and we expect to be examined again in 2016. The UK voluntarily provides mid term reports to the UN on the UPR recommendations. The Mid Term Report 2014 is available online at: http://www.justice.gov.uk/human-rights/universal-periodic-review

  4. Expected Timeline for reporting to the UN • 2015 • Examination under the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) • [to be confirmed] Examination under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) • 2016 • [to be confirmed] Examination under the International Covenant of Economic, Cultural and Social Rights (ICESCR) • [to be confirmed] Examination under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) • [to be confirmed] Examination under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) • [to be confirmed] Universal Periodic Review (UPR)
