  2. What is the TOEFL iBT? The TOEFL iBT, or Internet-Based Test, is an English language proficiency test widely accepted by universities and institutions around the world. It assesses your ability to understand and use academic English at the university level. The TOEFL iBT consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each section tests different aspects of your English proficiency, and all four sections contribute to your overall score. The total test duration is approximately 4 hours, with each section lasting between 41 and 80 minutes.

  3. Reading Section Breakdown The Reading section presents you with 3-4 passages from various academic disciplines, such as natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Each passage is accompanied by 10-14 multiple-choice questions that assess your comprehension of the main ideas, supporting details, and the author's perspective. Here's what to expect: Passage Types: Diverse academic content, covering a wide range of topics. Question Types: Identifying main ideas, understanding supporting details, making inferences, analyzing vocabulary in context, and recognizing the author's purpose and tone. Remember: Strong reading comprehension skills are key to excelling in this section.

  4. Listening Section Breakdown The Listening section presents you with audio recordings of academic lectures and campus-related conversations. You'll answer 6-9 multiple-choice questions per recording, testing your ability to grasp the main ideas, specific details, speaker's attitude, and overall purpose. Here's what to expect: Audio Types: Lectures on various academic topics and dialogues between students and faculty. Question Types: Identifying the main points of the lecture or conversation, understanding specific details, recognizing the speaker's attitude and purpose, and following the flow of information. Remember: Active listening is crucial. Pay close attention to keywords, transitions, & the speaker's tone.

Speaking Section Breakdown The Speaking section consists of 6 independent and integrated tasks Here's what to expect: Independent Tasks (4 tasks): You'll express your personal opinions and experiences on familiar topics, such as describing your favorite place or discussing a challenging situation. Integrated Tasks (2 tasks): You'll demonstrate your ability to summarize information from a reading passage and a listening clip, followed by expressing your opinion on the topic Each task will be timed, so clear and concise communication is essential. Tip: Practise speaking English regularly and record yourself to identify areas for improvement.

  6. Writing Section Breakdown Demonstrate your writing prowess! The Writing section presents you with two writing tasks: an integrated and an independent essay, each requiring approximately 300 words. Integrated Task: You'll summarise key points from a reading passage and a listening clip, then express your opinion on the topic by analysing and evaluating the information presented. Independent Task: You'll express your opinion on a given topic by stating your position, providing relevant reasons and examples, and supporting your arguments with evidence.
