Geared machines use worm gears to control mechanical movement of lift cars by “rolling” steel hoist ropes over a drive sheave which is attached to a gearbox driven by a high speed motor. An electrically controlled brake between the motor and the reduction unit stops the lift, holding the car at the desired floor level.
