DOES DRINKING LOTS OF WATER REALLY MAKE YOU LOOK YOUNGER? A Sunshine Organics Guide
Lets be honest. You're at least slightly interested in the world of celebrities. Especially when they share their beauty tips.
So when several of them claim to have found "eternal youth" simply by drinking up to a gallon of water per day, you're all ears.
But can drinking lots of water really make you look younger? And is it even good for you?
We’ve looked at the scientific research. And the findings may surprise you. Let’s dive right in.
We're sure you've heard the “8x8 rule”. It claims you should drink 8 glasses of water, of 8 oz. (≈240 mL) each, per day.
That's a lot of water. But is it really the right amount for a healthy adult to drink daily?
They discovered that not a single peer- reviewed study confirms the “8x8 rule.”
But they did find studies suggesting that 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water is too much for most adults to drink in a day.
SO HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU REALLY DRINK?
According to a researcher from the University of Connecticut, “Fluid needs are dynamic, and need to be individualized from person to person.”
How do you know what’s the right amount of water for you?
Easy. Just use our quick checklist to determine how much water your body really needs.
What's wrong with drinking too much water?
Your kidneys can process about2-3 cups (a half liter) of liquid per hour.
What happens if you drink more water than your kidneys can process?
Your cells will get waterlogged, causing them to swell.
This is especially dangerous for one particular part of your body:
Waterlogged brain cells have no room to expand because they are constrained by your skull.
So when you drink way too much water, it can cause “seizures, coma, respiratory arrest, brain stem herniation, and death,” according to Harvard Medical School.
Drinking too much water can also damage your kidneys.
At very least, you will have to run to the bathroom a lot more often, with no genuine health benefit.
So how can you tell if you're drinking the right amount of water?
Easy. As long as your "thirst barometer" has not been distorted by old age or medication, you should drink according to your thirst.
So even if it's not good for you, can drinking lots of water rejuvenate your skin?
Researchers from the University of Hamburg asked study participants to drink 2.25 liters (76 oz.) of mineral water per day.
They found that participants' skin got thicker, which reduced fine lines.
This was only because these participants had been drinking too little water before the study began.
In other words, drinking water will only help your skin to look younger if you are dehydrated to begin with.
So to sum up: despite celebrity claims, drinking water does not make wrinkles disappear. It can only help your skin if you are dehydrated.
