Blog: Statesmandebate.com HONING LEADERSHIP QUALITIES Some people say that great leaders are born not made. That’s not necessarily true. Though a person may get the quality of leadership from their genes, it is not enough that the gene is there, it is needed that the person continues to hone it with practice, patience, determination, understanding and other virtues that a good leader needs to imbibe and impart. Moreover, the person has to have the courage to lead, and show those who follow that there is merit in his ways and his words, that they are worth following. For those who are meant to go on this path, an early start to developing those skills is vital. The curiosity to learn more things, and moreover argue and debate in favor of or against what is told is more prominent in teenage years. One quality of a leader is to be strongly opinionated, so debate camps are something that can help hone that quality. A teenager quite adept at debating might also try the model congress. These camps help to build confidence, not just in themselves, but also to stand in front of a crowd or peer group and put forth their views. Even those who aren’t adept at it can be helped by a public speaking coach. A good leader doesn’t just tell the way, but shows the way for more leaders to be born or made. Workshops for teachers and workshops for college students help guide both the leader and the future leader to find the path they may be meant to be on.
