  3. Alternative name The alternative name for indian pitta is Navrang. Scientific name Pitta Brachyura

  4. Description Indian pitta is 17 to 19 cm in length. It is also known as a small bird or stubby tail bird. Both sexes look alike. It is known as a passerine bird of the Indian subcontinent.

  5. Description It has nine colors. Its color pattern conceals it from predators. Color pattern of juveniles are duller. They hop on ground for feeding mostly.

  6. Appearance It has stout, dark grey or blackish bill. It has buffer color cap on the head with black line. Color of eyes are black with black linning outside. Folded wings are green while the uppersides are sky blue in color.

  7. Appearance Underside head has white yellowish color. Lower belly has bright yellow color. Short tail with black color. Undertail is bright red.

  8. Habitat This specie is found in rural gardens, urban parks and plantations, tropical and subtropical moist montane forests, scrub jungle, deciduous and dense evergreen forest,dense undergrowth,perch on branches, and  wetlands.

  9. Distribution Range This specie is geographically distributed in most of the countries of the world including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, Himalayan foothills, south to Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir and west Bangal

  10. It is a nosiy bird with three note whistles. It can be described as a wheeet tieu or wieet pyou or  hh-wit-wiyu. During vocalization, this species point its bill upward. Call

  11. Behaviors Feeding They feed largely insects,scraps from the ground in rural areas, small invertebrates, insect larvae, termites, beetles, ants, crickets, small snails, earthworm,spiders and millipedes

  12. Flight They usually flying for long distances. They look more beautiful during flight through their wings

  13. Breeding The mating season begins from May to August in different regions. This specie is monogamous. They build their nests the ground or on low branches of shrubs.

  14. Breeding The clutch consist of four to five eggs. Both sexes protect young ones from predators. The incubation period is more two weeks.
