Dutch & Danish urban communities • ~50% of journeys include cycling • All other journeys include walking • Cycling/walking is safe for young (~12y) and inexperienced • 10-20 mph limits on all roads • Cycle training, safe cycle parking, etc • Bus lanes..more efficient • Dangerous crossings addressed

  3. Such urban communities achieve… • ~100% walking & cycling & bus use • 30% less street crime • 25% less obesity/diabetes • 30% less drug use/depression • 10% greater academic achievement • Everyone knows & respects their neighbours • shop locally & use local facilities

  7. Change in culture • Road engineering…Council £££ • Cameras, narrow road segments, (humps?) • Need local support • 66% want slow speeds (own road!) • Speeds are slow already • Have to use car less…many will have to change…25 years to change • Bus service more efficient

  8. Support • Residents…to support approaches to city Council • People to help • Business/organisations to support approaches • A little financial support from businesses ……more pleasant neighbourhood, more jobs/investment
