  2. Our Mission Our Vision It is believed that the above words were famously uttered in support as young Prince Siddhartha tried to rescue an injured Sarus Crane. Later as the young prince came to be known as the Buddha these words became an epitome of Buddhist viewpoint on nature conservation. Once saved by the Buddha, the Sarus Cranes and their habitats are threatened once again, Lumbini Crane Sanctuary is trying to save the Sarus cranes and their habitat in his birthplace once again several millennia later. Lumbini Crane Conservation Center works in Lumbini region to manage and protect a 256 hectare Lumbini Crane Sanctuary as a biodiversity conservation and learning center and works with the local communities of Lumbini region to conserve cranes and the ecosystems, wetlands and watersheds, and protect the natural diversity of Greater Lumbini Area's landscape. :

  6. Introduction: • A joint effort between Nepalese crane conservationists and the International Crane Foundation (ICF-USA) was initiated in 1989 to study the Sarus Crane in Nepal. • The research identified that natural ecosystems of the agricultural field of Rupandehi District and the Lumbini Garden dedicated to the birthplace of Lord Buddha were ideal site for crane conservation initiative. On December 25, 1994 an agreement between Lumbini Development Trust and ICF was signed for a 50-year lease of 256 acres of land to establish the Lumbini Crane Sanctuary (LCS) in Lumbini. • And at the request of ICF, Lumbini Crane Conservation Center (LCCC) took the responsibility of managing Lumbini Crane Sanctuary to preserve the habitat and ecology of Sarus Crane. • Furthermore LCCC also aims to restore natural habitat diversity for Sarus Crane through the mobilization of local people’s initiatives in Rupandehi District. • Initially, LCCC constructed five artificial wetlands in LCS, and it wasn’t long before Sarus Cranes began nesting in this new example of harmony between man and nature. • Since its inception, the LCS has recorded over 210 species of birds, and 200 – 300 pairs of Sarus Cranes nesting in and around its territory.

  7. Our Objectives: LCCC aims to educate, empower and inspire to engage people in resolving threats to Sarus Crane and their diverse landscapes to; Restore and recreate the natural habitat diversity of the Nepalese Central Terai, with special consideration for the Sarus Crane Involve the local community in the conservation and management of their natural resources. Or Strengthening the local communities to manage wetland and to uplift their economic status while maintaining the biodiversity. Establish an non-formal education facility and wild garden in demonstration of Buddha’s love for nature and the relevance of his teachings for modern conservation. Conduct the non-formal environmental awareness programs for school children, youth and local communities on biodiversity conservation and wise use of wetlands for their economic benefit.

  8. LCCC’s Plan and Activities: • Saving Buddha's Cranes (Sarus Cranes) in Nepal is increasing the challenges to survival from the rapid urbanization, the use of pesticides, reduced water flows, and industrialization. • Prince Siddhartha Gautama fought to save this magnificent bird in 2,500 years ago, and today his people wish to continue honoring this noble mission. • Lumbini Development Trust (LDT) is partnering with the International Crane Foundation (ICF) to manage and conserve 256 acres of land in the Lumbini Master Plan area and developed it for the Sarus Crane and Bird sanctuary. • We envision that securing the Sarus Crane population in Nepal especially in Lumbini through community-supported conservation practices and governmental policies that maintain the rich biodiversity of agricultural landscapes to continue protecting the Sarus Crane and its habitat in the Lumbini Garden by developing following plans and activities: :
