Your task:A new island has just been discovered off the Western coast of North America. People have inhabited it, but they are struggling to get tourists to visit to keep the island running and generate an income for local residents. In your groups, you are now a business. A team of designers, accountants and directors, who have been given the opportunity to design the islands first theme park to attract as many visitors as you can to the area. You will have a spending limit of £500,000.You must decide together what rides you are going to have, what facilities you will need, and how much income your park will generate. You will all work together to complete the project, however, you will each have a primary role in your theme park: project director, account director, design director, eco adviser and publicity director. Your team will gain points throughout the project based on your team work, communication skills and perseverance. You will then present your ideas at the end.

Task 1Your first task is to assign roles in your theme park company. The job descriptions are outlined below. Consider your strengths and weaknesses as a team, and communicate these effectively. *Remember, you will all be working together, so you will have a chance to support each other with each role*
Task 2a – Cost to buildHere you will begin to think about what facilities you will have in your theme park and calculate the total cost to build. Remember you have a budget of £500,000. You may want to leave some money in your budget for advertising costs in task 8. You MUST have the items in red in your theme park. You MUST have a path leading between facilities and areas of your theme park. You MUST not exceed your budget of £500,000.
Task 2a – Cost to build (inventory)Consider how much of each item you will include in your design and keep a record of your costs below. What it the total cost to build your theme park? £
Task 2b – Design your theme parkUse an A3 piece of squared paper to design your theme park. Your chosen attractions must take up the amount of squares specified on the table in task 2a. You MUST have a path linking the areas, rides and facilities. Consider if your theme park has ‘zones’. If you have hotels, where should they go? If you have boat tours, then you need to be on the coast.An example is shown below:- on your map all rides should be labelled. - you should have a clear key to help people to understand your map. E.g. = major ride = boat
Task 3a – Running your theme parkTo run your theme park the following costs will apply to each item that you have every day. You will need to decide how many of each item you will include in your design, and calculate how much it would cost to run your theme park for 1 day. Complete the table.
Task 3b – Calculate the total cost to run your theme park for 1 dayHere you will keep an inventory where you decide what items you will include in your theme park, and how much it will cost to run your theme park for one day. Use the table from Task 3a to help you. Consider what your visitors will need, and if you will split your theme park into themes areas.

Task 4 – Calculate incomeYou must decide how much you will charge each person to enter your theme park. It must be cheap enough to attract visitors, but enough to make a profit. Task 5 – Profit and lossWork out your total profit from the admission price, cafes and shops.Each visitor to your theme park will spend:£5 at each café £3 at each shop (this includes hot dog stands, photo booths, vending machines and ice cream vans). Task 6 – Design a logoEvery good theme park has an eye catching logo. Here are some famous theme park logos that you can take inspiration from. Design an eye catching logo for your theme park.
Task 7 – Eco ReportConsider how you will make your theme park eco friendly. Think about what you could include in your theme park to boost sustainability and promote eco friendly behaviour. Do some research and write down your ideas below.
Task 8a – Advertising campaignConsider how you will attract visitors to your theme park. You will need to decide together on the best type of advertising for your theme park. Consider the benefits and disadvantages of each one, thinking about their cost and effectiveness. Depending on what advertising you choose, you can calculate how many extra visitors you will get each day using the table below. You must make sure that you have left enough space in your budget for your chosen campaign. Task 8b – Advertisement campaignNow is the time to create your advertising campaign. Read the following instructions. 1) PosterUsing an A4 piece of paper (or a computer) create an eye catching poster that will attract visitors to your theme park. Make sure you include key information, such as names of some of your rides, ticket price and the facilities available. You could even make up some reviews from customers who have visited before. Consider where you will put these posters to attract the most visitors. 2) LeafletUsing an A4 piece of paper, create an eye catching leaflet that will attract visitors to your theme park. Make sure you include key information, such as names of some of your rides, ticket price and the facilities available. You could even make up some reviews from customers who have visited before. Consider where you will put these leaflets to attract the most visitors. 3) Newspaper articleWrite a newspaper article which consists of a review of your theme park. Pretend you are a customer who has visited the theme park and has written an article to encourage others to visit. Consider all the rides you went on, and what was most exciting about your visit. Remember, you want to persuade the reader to come to the theme park, so its important you explain why you had such an amazing time. 4) Radio adWrite a script for a short radio advert that promotes your theme park. Think about the key information you need to include to encourage visitors. This must be at least 200 words and needs to be able to be performed by a member of your team. 5) TV adDesign a TV advert by creating a motion script. Show us what is happening in each scene and what information you would include.
Task 9 – Design a rollercoasterChoose your most famous attraction at your park. It could be your biggest rollercoaster or most famous ride. Give it a name and design a prototype below. Include labels such as: the name, what age it is for, how tall you have to be etc.

Points can be awarded if by the end, a marble can make it through from start to finish. Extra points for flare and creativity.
Task 10 – DesignIf you have time, you can now design anything extra you would like to include in your project. Such as: tickets, ride names and posters, café menus, shop list, website page etc.
PresentationTo complete the project, each group can present their ideas to the class. TOP TIP – Explain your project as if you’re explaining it to someone who has no idea what you’ve been doing. Think a out the order that you explain things so it is clear and logical. You need to try to persuade your teacher and peers to choose your theme park. What makes yours better than everyone else?
