  2. Lyric Poems • Poem that conveys a particular emotional state or state of mind • Can be long, short, rhymed, or unrhymed • Different types include ode, elegy, and dramatic monologue

  3. Narrative Poems • Tells the reader a story or provide an account on a particular event/ events • Types in include epic, ballad, and romance

  4. Other Poems • Epigram- short witty verse with a wry twist • Limerick- humorous verse form composed of 5 lines • Parody- poem in which another poets tone, form, or language is imitated

  5. Comprised of 14 lines with rhymes arranged according to a particular rhyme scheme. Varies with type of sonnet Types include Italian (Petrarchan), English (Shakespearean) Italian sonnet has a rhyme scheme of abbaabba / cdecde variations are common in the cdecde section. English sonnet has a rhyme scheme of abab / cdcd / efef / gg Sonnets

Italian sonnet 2 part poem First part is an octave comprised of 2 quatrains Second part is a sestet Octave presents theme Sestet reflects and concludes English Four part structure 3 quatrains and a couplet Quatrains present examples or statements Couplet comments or gives a twist on the quatrains Sonnets continued

  7. Villanelles 19 lines 5 tercets followed by a quatrain Rhyme scheme aba / aba / aba / aba / aba / abaa Villanelles

  8. “song of sixes” Six 6 lines stanzas and a 3 lines envoi End words of the first stanza are repeated in varied order as end words of the other stanzas and also recur in the envoi Haiku is the Japanese form Now the swinging bridge Is quieted with creepers like our tendrilled life. Sestinas
