FEATURES AND COMPONENTS OF AN ANESTHESIA WORKSTATION

An anesthesia workstation generates mix of various gasses such as oxygen, air, anesthetic agents and many more. These gasses along with agents altogether maintain anesthetic state of the patients or induce anesthesia to the patients. 1. FEATURES AND COMPONENTS OF AN ANESTHESIA WORKSTATION

  2. An anesthesia workstation generates mix of various gasses such as oxygen, air, anesthetic agents and many more. These gasses along with agents altogether maintain anesthetic state of the patients or induce anesthesia to the patients. Different types of machine components are associated with anesthesia machine such as oxygen flowmeter, pressurized tanks, pipelines, cylinders, vaporizer, patient breathing circuit and scavenging system. The oxygen is the main source of the system. Without oxygen the patient cannot survive and when the patient is in anesthetic state, the oxygen levels drop. To maintain the oxygen, a centralized distribution system like pressurized tanks or oxygen cylinders are used that supply continuous oxygen to the patients. Oxygen flowmeter is a needle valve that helps to adjust the amount of oxygen flow to the patient breathing circuit. Vaporizer produces vapor from a liquid anesthetic such as halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, methoxyflurane and many more. The patient breathing circuit consist of connectors, tubing and valve components that forms the channel to supply anesthetic gasses to the patients. The breathing circuit supplies the mixture of anesthetic gasses and oxygen to the patient and at the same time eliminates the carbon dioxide that the patient exhales from the body. The breathing circuit also controls the ventilation system at times.

  3. The scavenging system is present in a modern anesthetic workstation which removes excess anesthetic gasses and carbon dioxide from the system. Excess carbon dioxide or anesthetic gasses can result harm the working professionals in the working environment. There are numerous features of an anesthesia machine. Let us discuss some of the features. The modern anesthesia workstation is well known for its ability to work as a target controlled anesthetic machine. With these target-controlled machines, operators can set values such that the machine will automatically monitor the parameters and adjust the gas delivery. Other important features are automatic record keeping, automatic testing and power backup system using battery.
