  1. Biological components of an ecosystem You should have observed, counted and identified living organisms in an ecosystem

  2. The method we used for plants was a QUADRAT • We used PITFALL TRAPS for soil invertebrates • You must know the correct way to use a quadrat to estimate the population of a plant • Write in your notes how to use a quadrat to estimate the population of daisies on a playing field

  3. KEYS • You should be able to use a key to identify organisms • The key can be either a BRANCHING key or a PAIRED STATEMENT key • You must be able to make up a key for a group of organisms • Only use features which you can see

  4. BRANCHING • Example of start

  5. PAIRED STATEMENT • Example of key • 1. Has legs go to 2 • No legs SNAKE • 2 Has tail go to 3 • No tail go to 4 • 3 Has blah, blah, blah go to ----- • No blah, blah, blah a thingmebob • Etc, etc

  6. Now make up your own key for these animals

  7. BIODIVERSITY

  8. A high level of BIODIVERSITY is good. • When we talk about BIODIVERSITY we mean ALL the DIFFERENT living things in an ecosystem • Most organisms have more than one food source and most are eaten by more than one other animal. An ecosystem is stable if it has lots of different plants and animals in it. This means that if one food source runs out another will be able to replace it

  9. Anything which causes a reduction in BIODIVERSITY is bad for the environment and everything which lives in it.

  10. Write down how the following things can reduce biodiversity in an ecosystem OVERFISHING High levels of pollution

  11. Cutting down rainforest

  12. Planting hillsides full of conifer trees

  13. Helping to increase biodiversity • Write down how the following will help to increase biodiversity Planting a mixed deciduous woodland
