  2. Session Aims The learner will be able to: 1. Be able to carry out a workplace improvement activity 1.1 Describe a potential improvement within a work area 1.2 Perform a waste targeting workplace improvement activity capable of delivery measurable improvements 2. Understand the methods used to identify and eliminate waste 2.1 Demonstrate ways to determine the amount of waste in a work activity 2.2 Demonstrate the use of cost effective ways to eliminate the waste

  3. Session Aims (2) The Learner will be able to: 3. Understand the principles of Visual Management 3.1 Describe the role of visual management in the workplace 3.2 Consider the need to create/update visual systems to help manage the workplace 4. Understand the role of standard company documentation 4.1 Describe the role of standard company documentation in the workplace 4.2 Consider the need to create/update any standard company documentation to help sustain the improvement

  4. QETA3/077 Workplace Improvement Assessment Detail (1) Assessment Requirements: This assessment involves an internal practical assessment that covers the assessment criteria 1.1 to 4.2. Objective of the assessment: This assessment is intended to assess the learners ability to carry out a waste targeting continuous improvement activity and produce a report which outlines the improvements made. Pass Mark = Practical Assessment, Assessor Checklist – Pass/Fail Preparation Required: Provision of suitable scenario to enable the assessment to be carried out.

  5. QETA3/077 Workplace Improvement Assessment Detail (2) Resources needed: Resource that provides a suitable scenario that enables the assessment requirements to be achieved. Solutions and marking criteria: Attached to this unit are the practical assessment containing; learner instructions, learner report sheet and assessor checklist.

Workplace Improvement – Learner Instructions (1) Why are we doing this: To demonstrate the ability to carry out a waste targeting continuous improvement activity and to produce a report which outlines the actions taken to deliver the improvements. You will need to: 1. Identify a waste targeting improvement activity and record details of the current situation. • Provide details of the process/product/activity being targeted for improvement (A.C 1.1) • Give a brief description of the current situation (A.C 1.1) • State the reasons for targeting the process/product/activity for improvement (A.C 1.1)

Record details of the actions taken • Measure the current situation (A.C 2.1) • Provide details of the actions taken to carry out the improvement (A.C 2.2) • Identify who was involved or consulted during the improvement activity (A.C 1.2) 3. Record details of the situation after the improvement activity • Provide details of the process/product/activity after the improvements has been implemented (A.C 1.2) • Identify the actions that would be needed to prevent recurrence (A.C 3.2, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2) • Consider the ways that would help sustain the improvement (A.C 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2)

Record the benefits/improvements made • Provide details of the benefits that have resulted from the improvement activity (A.C 1.2) • Identify the category/categories of waste that the improvement has targeted such as; waste of waiting, waste of overproduction, waste of repair/correction/scrap, waste of motion, waste of over processing, waste of inventory, waste of conveyance/transportation (A.C. 1.2) • Identify the category/categories of improvement that has been targeted such as; safety, quality, delivery, cost, morale, environment (A.C 1.2) • Agree and state a date for the full implementation of the improvement (A.C 1.2)

Workplace Improvement Remember: - Make a solid suggestion that you can back up, not just a flimsy suggestion - Make sure you can provide solid evidence for why the problem exists in the first place - Make sure you provide a well described improvement - Think of two suggestions and use the best one of the two!
