  1. Tips for Parents to Improve Children’s Speech and Language Problems with Reading Skills

  2. INTRODUCTION Bedtime stories are always exciting for kids in lots of ways. Reading storybooks to children has a major impact on improving their speech and language skills. Children are always intimidated by stories, so why not make it a way of rectifying their speech disorders? Some of the best speech therapists give these valid suggestions to parents as part of their speech therapy sessions.

  3. Here are some of the tips to follow while reading together with children: Pick books with rhymes and songs Different from the monotonous narrations, children always love stories with rhymes and songs incorporated into it to make the reading exciting. Children could sway and clap along with the rhythm and maybe sing along or fill in the blank words, you leave them to fill.

  4. Point to the pictures in storybooks and talk to the children Children’s books are often filled with pictures on one side or sometimes two sides. It is more engaging for children if you could point the pictures and ask them questions like, “Where is the dog?” or “Pick your favorite cat among the three”. Relate the pictures or incidents to the child’s real life Relating children to the story really help them to identify themselves with the characters in the story. You could always say “Look, the baby looks just like you” or “The cat’s apron is blue, just as your frock”.

  5. Ask them questions about the story You could always ask and discuss the story plot with children by asking them questions and induce them to answer the questions, such as “Where do you think the elephant went?” or “What could happen next?” Make them aware of the letters and sounds Stories have a lot of animals with different sounds. You can point to a cat and ask “What sound does a cat make?” or “Cat starts with which letter?” or “Spell/Pronounce the word Cat” etc.

  6. Pick out the rhyming words Stories have many pairs of rhyming words and you could ask the children to pick 5 pairs of rhyming words that start with the letter “M”. Now you can see them finding the words. Read the same story repeatedly Instead of switching stories every day, it is best to stick to the same story again and again, because it helps for a thorough understanding of the words and learning the language.
