  1. Coordination and response The Nervous System in Mammals Chapter 13

  2. Sensitivity The ability of an organism to respond to a stimulus is called sensitivity / irritability response usually beneficial to the organism varies between invertebrates and vertebrates

  3. Invertebrates • Do not have well developed brain • Has a nervous system to control activities and reactions to surroundings Vertebrates • Has a well developed brain • Has a nervous system • Highly specialized sense organs

  4. Voluntary vs Involuntary actions Involuntary actions - Actions not under the control of the will - e.g. heartbeat, peristalsis, breathing movements Voluntary actions - Actions under the control of the will

  5. Nervous system The Nervous System is divided into: 1. Central Nervous System 2. Peripheral Nervous System

  6. Nervous System

  7. Central Nervous System (CNS) Consists of 1. Brain 2. Spinal cord

  8. Peripheral Nervous System Consists of • cranial nerves from brain • spinal nerves from spinal cord • sense organs (sense stimuli → receptors)

  9. In summary… Central Nervous System = Brain + Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System =nerves to rest of body

  10. What happens when… stimuli Tap on shoulder Fraction of a second receptors nerve impulses Feel the tap CNS → Brain nerve impulses Fraction of a second turn head/shrug shoulders effectors Voluntary action
