  1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups/issues?

  2. What genre have you made, and what are genre conventions? • For our opening sequence we went with the genre of thriller/ crime • We also had inspiration from typical Cop movies Genre conventions are story elements such as character archetypes, key events, and settings that are commonly found in a specific genre.

  3. Comparison 1: Hot Fuzz Released February 2007, Directed by Edgar Wright One of the main comparisons of Hot Fuzz and Intoxicated is that it is based on two British police officers, Both of which are around middle age. similarly one is quite ‘daft’ and one seems to be quite authoritative .

  4. Comparison 2: Breaking Bad One main comparison is the shots. The shot angle and size we used in our opening sequence is largely inspired by breaking bad. Also the characters are similar in the fact that one of them is typically a ‘shepherd’ and the other a ‘sheep’

  5. I was especially inspired by the wide/establishing shots in breaking bad when creating our establishing crane shot If we had the opportunity to continue this project the shots would definitely continue to be inspired by breaking bad

  6. Comparison 3: end of watch Comparison 4: stranger things - Similar to stranger things in terms of genre. With intoxicated we want to create a thriller, that’s why there is a sense of mystery in our opening sequence, the audience doesn’t know what it is that the police men are looking at Both two male middle age police officers The shots are similar to the type of shots we wish to achieve

  7. challenge One way in which we challenged our set genre of Thriller is that we created an element of comedy in our opening sequence. We did this in numerous ways, one of which is the stereotype of Cops enjoying donuts. Another way is the element of authority, one of the police men is visibly more authoritative than the other, making the other seem clueless in a way and unsure of how to deal with the situation whereas the other seems professional. Narrative Our narrative was an interesting one to film. Originally we had the idea of doing it all in one take for creative purposes, But because of our genre thriller we wanted to keep the opening sequence captivating to our audience with a change of angles and shot sizes throughout the scene.

  8. Gender/ race Two white middle aged men, one of which is a small town police officer and the other is a detective. This can present how white men are usually the ones who make decisions and are in charge even though they seem to be unsure of how to deal with the situation, this is an opportunity to open to more characters throughout the film of different genders and races who may be better equipped to deal with the siatuation Countertype One of the things that our opening sequence does to defy stereotypes in way is that the ‘danger’ happens during the daytime, instead of the typical nighttime setting in most thriller/ horror movies. This was largely inspired by Jordan Peele's Upcoming movie ’NOPE’.

  9. The main 4 Mise-en-scene One of the men is wearing a coat and glasses which makes him seem more important and sophisticated than the man in the original blue police officer uniform. Camera The low angle shot that takes place throughout the scene acts as a sort of POV shot from the entity on the ground that the two men are looking at. The crane shot that goes into an establishing shot of the field shows the audience where the situation is taking place. editing The back and forth cut throughout the men during their conversation shows each of their reactions towards the conversation. The amount of time that the camera is on each person shows who is in control, in this case it is the man in the glasses giving him more authority. sound There is a slight sound of wind in the background of the scene to create an atmosphere. The non-diegetic creepy sound begins to gradually build as it nears the end of the scene which turns in to a final load bang at the end which makes it quite intense.
