  2. Introduction • There are only four international games which can fly the Olympic symbols and are admitted by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) • Olympic Games • Paralympic Games • Special Olympics World Games • Deaflympics Fun Time

Paralympic Games • For athletes with physical disabilities • Including mobility disabilities, amputees, visual disabilities and those with cerebral palsy • The name derives from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") • refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games • No relation with paralysis or paraplegia • The Games take place three weeks after the closing of the Olympics • In the same host city and using the same facilities • First Game • Summer Paralympics were held in Rome in 1960 • Winter Paralympics were held in Sweden in 1976 • Approximately 4,000 athletes with ages ranging from 11 to 66 in 2004 Summer Games Fun Time

Special Olympics World Games • Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver • It’s the world's largest year-round program of sports training and competition for individuals (age 8 and older) with intellectual disabilities • The Special Olympics Young Athletes program is for ages 2 through 7 • It is the only sports organization authorized by the IOC to use the name Olympics in its title • First Game • Summer Special Olympics Games were held in Chicago in 1968 • Winter Special Olympics were held in Steamboat Springs in Feb. 1977 Fun Time

  5. Special Olympics World Games • Special Olympics Athlete Oath • "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." • Athletes finishing from fourth to last place are presented a suitable place ribbon with appropriate ceremony • Compete with other athletes whose ability difference are within 10% • Approximately 7000 athletes from 150 countries in 2003 Summer Games Fun Time

Deaflympics • Current name is since 2000 • "International Games for the Deaf" from 1924 to 1965 • "World Games for the Deaf“ from 1966 to 1999 • It’s the longest running multi-sport event excluding the Olympics themselves (20th) • First Game • Summer Games were held in Paris in 1924 • Winter Games were held in Seefeld, Austria in 1949 • In 2005 the 20th Games were held in Melbourne, "more than 3,000 deaf athletes and officials from 75 nations" participated Fun Time

Olympic sports • The current program of the Olympic Games includes 35 different sports, 53 disciplines and more than 400 events • Ex. swimming & water polo are both disciplines of aquatics • The Summer Olympic Games includes 28 sports with 38 disciplines • Winter Olympic Games includes 7 sports with 15 disciplines Fun Time

  9. Modern pentathlon • Simulates the experience of a 19th century cavalry soldier behind enemy lines • He must ride an unfamiliar horse, fight with pistol and sword, swim, and run • Since 1912 1. Pistol shooting 20 times in 40 sec (10m) 2. Fencing in one min and must get 1 point 3. 200 meter freestyle swimming 4. Show jumping on horseback for 450m in 20 min 5. 3 km cross country running Fun Time
