Breastcanceristhemostcommoncancertodayandistheleadingcauseofcancerdeathsinwomenworldwide.Infact, recent studies reveal that 1 in 28 women in India have breast cancer during their lifetime. This involves a mammogram or X-ray of the breasts. A mammogram can detect cancer at an early stage, and the earlier you know, the better your chances of successfultreatment. 1 Breast self-examination(BSE) Breastself-examination(BSE)shouldbedoneonceamonthsoyoubecomefamiliarwiththeusualappearanceandfeel ofyourbreast.Thismakesit easiertonoticeanychangesinthebreasts. Pleasenote:Ifyoumenstruate,thebesttimeto doBSEis 2or3daysafteryourperiodends,whenyourbreastsareleastlikelytobetenderorswollen. Factorsthatincreasetheriskofbreastcancer Age:43to46isahighriskageandtheoddsonlygethigheraswegrowolder.4outof5breastcancercasesareinwomen aged 50 orover. Step1 Step2 Step3 Family history: If you have a family history of breast cancer, your risks are naturally higher and you must get yourself checkedbytheageof30.Also,thehigherthenumberofrelativeswithbreastcancer,thebiggeryourrisk. Ifyourrelativeis positivewithBRCA1gene,youhave72% chancesofdevelopingBreastCancerby80yearsofage. If your relative is positive with BRCA 2 gene, youhave69%chancesofdevelopingBreastCancer. In front of a mirror, inspect for anything unusual such as anydischarge from the nipples or puckering, dimpling,orscalingoftheskin. Watching closely in the mirror, claspyourhandsbehindyourhead and press your handsforward Next, press your hands firmly on your hips andbowslightlytowardyourmirrorasyou pullyourshouldersandelbowsforward. Weight:Beingoverweight(moreinchesaroundthewaist)withdysregulated sugars/highcholesterolincreasesthe risk. Menstruation:Startingyourperiodsatayoungerageorhavingalatemenopauseincreasestherisk. Steps 2 & 3 help to check any change in shape or contourofyourbreasts.Whiledoingthem,yourchest muscles willtighten Some women do the next part of the exam in the showerbecausefingersglideoversoapyskin,makingit easy toconcentrateonthetextureunderneath. Being younger whenyou have children also decreases therisk. Breastfeeding Besides itsbenefitsto the child andmother, breastfeeding also reduces the risk of breastcancer. PhysicalActivity Even 30 minutes of moderate physicalactivity 4-5 times a week goes a long way to reduce the chances of breastcancer. Healthyweight levels soexcessweight after the menopause increases your risk of breastcancer. Raise your left arm. Use three or fourfingersofyourrighthandto exploreyourleftbreastfirmly,carefully, and thoroughly. Beginning at the outer edge, press the flat part of your fingers in small circles, moving the circles slowly around thebreast. Graduallyworktowardthenipple. Besuretocovertheentirebreast. Pay special attention to the area betweenthebreastandtheunderarm, including the underarmitself. Feelforanyunusuallumpormass under theskin. Gently squeeze the nippleand look for adischarge. (Ifyouhaveanydischargeduring the month whether or not it is during BSE - see your doctor.) Repeat steps 4 and 5 on your rightbreast. Steps 4 and 5 should be repeated lyingdown.Lieflatonyourbackwith yourleftarmoveryourhead. Keep apilloworfoldedtowelunderyour left shoulder. This position flattens the breast and makes it easier toexamine. Use the same circular motiondescribed earlier. Repeat the exam onyour rightbreast. 3 Detecting breastcancer Earlydetectioncansaveyourlife.Whetheryouareatariskornot,ithelpstolookat,andfeelyourbreasts.Knowwhatto lookforsothatyoucanseeadoctorintime.Dependingonyourage andthetimeofthemonth,yourbreastsmay feel
