  1. Breast Cancer By Shelby Palmer && Whitney Brosious

  2. Sometimes, precancerous cells may be found within breast tissue. Regular healthy cells get mutated into cancer cells. They divide uncontrollably and quickly create many more or the same harmful cells. All of the mutated cells form together in the breast called a tumor, creating a lump in the breast. Cancer cells are most likely to develop from either the ducts or the glands. These tumors may be referred to as “invasive ductal carcinoma” or “invasive lobular carcinoma”. What went wrong?

  3. The cells cannot do their real job, and cannot make new cells to the ones that die off. These cancer cells grow more than normal cells. These cells start to turn in to cancer cells, but they can be removed. At telephase, the cells divide out of control, and they cannot regulate themselves as normal cells This causes the formation of tumors. How the cell cycle is interrupted

  5. Types of Breast Cancer • Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS)- • Most common type of breast cancer. • This means that cancer is inside of the ducts , but haven’t spread throughout the breast tissue. • Invasive (or Infiltrating) Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) • Another type of breast cancer • This is where is spreads around to other parts of the body

  6. BRCA Genes • If a women has either BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, they are at higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. • The genes control the cells’ growth. A cell cannot produce new DNA and cannot divide, because of BRCA mutation. • They are large, and produce huge proteins. • BRCA 1- produces 1863 amino acids • BRCA 2-produces 3418 amino acids.

  7. What does a positive BRCA 1 & 2 gene test results mean • Positive results mean that you are not 100% sure to get cancer, it means you are at risk of getting cancer. • Negative results mean that your risks are equal to the general population.

  8. Scientist have proven that certain factors can lead to breast cancer. Family History- If you inherited BRCA genes. Age-As women get older, they get at more risk of being diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Teens can also get Breast Cancer. Diet and lifestyle choices- Not enough exercise, people who have a non-healthy diet, and people who do drugs, increase their risks of getting breast cancer. Why do people get breast cancer?

  9. Research, drugs, treatment options • Treatments are used to remove, destroy or control the cancer cells in a specific area, such as the breast. • The Goals of treatment are: • 1) To rid the body of the cancer as completely as possible.2) To prevent cancer from returning. • Stem cells may resist radiation treatment. • These stem cells can maintain the growth on the tumor.

  10. Treatments • Some types of treatments are : • Surgery – To remove the lymph node • Radiation Therapy – Using high levels of radiation to stop cells from growing and dividing and to kill them. • Chemotherapy – uses drugs to kill the cancer. • Hormone Therapy – Uses drugs to stop the hormones like estrogen from promoting the growth of breast cancer cells that may remain after breast cancer surgery. • Biological Therapy – Works by using the bodys immune system to destroy the cancer cells

  11. Fast Facts • Every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. • One woman in eight who lives to age 85 will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. • Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. • Breast cancer is one of the leading types found in women in this country. • 1,700 men discover they have breast cancer a year. • 60 or 70 year old men are detected to have it more. 12. Why is it pink? • It is a very powerful symbol to increase the awareness of breast cancer. • People wear pink ribbons to honor those who were lost due to breast cancer. And to support the progress we are making together to defeat breast cancer. • All survivors meet in October. • It was founded in 1995
