  2. Warm Up • IYP: What was WRONG with the Dark Ages? • What does Plague mean? Where have you heard the word before?

  5. The Beginning… • Black Sea 1347 • Headaches • Weak, Tired • Tough to walk.

  6. By the Third day • Lymph nodes swollen (Neck, armpits) EGG sized • Buboes, from Greek groin+ Bubonic plague • Skin blackens, mouth opens, internal bleeding.. seizures.

  7. Eventually:DEATH. BLACK DEATH

  8. The CULPRITS • The Devil? • Italians? • Rats? • SOMETHING SMALLER THAN RATS…

  9. Death • Italy • Avignon, France: 400 a DAY • Graveyards filled, dead in rivers. More bodies = more rats, =…

  10. Death Toll. • 90 percent chance of death • 2 million a year • 35 million.. • ONE THIRD OF ALL EUROPEANS.

  11. How to solve it! • Kill the culprits Humours: Blood (heart, summer air) Phlegm (brain, water) Yellow Bile (Liver, fire) Black Bile ( spleen, earth) • BARBERS • Blood letting • Self Flagellations • Killing Jews (1st holocaust)

  12. Solved… • Enough deaths • Eventually OK: Antibiotics, pesticides

  13. The Plague wasn’t all bad, in a weird way!!! • THOUSAND OF PEASANTS Died • Less people means: poor people are MORE VALUABLE • Break from Church Rule • ADD that to the new learning after the crusades…Europe wakes up…HUMANISM…. • A REBIRTH!!! A RENAISANCE!!!!
