  1. Stair Nosing and Skating Components

  2. What does AS 1428.1 (American Standard Industrial Classification of Plastic) describe Anti Slip Stair Nosingsystems? Non-slip stair nosing systems provide maximum protection to people who use stairs and those who visit your home on their own, as well as people with disabilities and the elderly. Stair treads are not permitted to extend beyond the edge of the riser's edge. Stair noses must be continuous all the way along the full length of the stair tread, up to and including the edge of the riser.

  3. So why don't manufacturers include a non-slip cast in their products anymore? It seems that once one manufacturer catches on, everybody follows suit. The non-slip cast is usually made from a thick plastic that is then covered with a non-slip powder coat. The finish is usually latex-based. A non-slip cast that meets the requirements of AS 14 1928.

  4. Does your staircase have curbs, moldings, or handrails? You must list all of these as part of your non-slip molding or handrail inspection when you order your Stair Nosing System. The manufacturer's site will tell you what standard colors are provided in the kits. Your dealer's site should also have information about standard colors and other requirements for use with their particular set of Stair Nosing Systems.

  5. Why is it important to include non-slip parts with my Stair Nosing System? The National Fire Protection Association says "The failure of a stair nose to meet national and state safety codes is the greatest single cause of personal injury related to stairway systems." That's why the National Fire Protection Association urges "builders and consumers alike to insist on non-slip stair nosing components as standard." The Consumer's Digest has also weighed in against the use of non-slip stair nosing parts. They said that a "no-slip component could be installed without a significant investment that adds a safety risk.

  6. If your stairs are narrow, curved, or lack a rail, you may be concerned about getting injured while on them. In this case, you can also use the same standard color and standard type of stair nosing as specified by the manufacturers. When stair nosing meets all of the standards for personal injury and the design does not make walking through them a threat, there is no reason to pay more for it.

  7. Do I have to purchase special non-slip stair nosing for all three of my flights? Not necessarily. Many companies offer standard colors and treads for different stair designs. Look for a manufacturer that will allow you to choose from their standard colors and standard treads. By doing so, you will not spend additional money or have to do extra work to comply with a standard color or design.

  8. Can non-slip strips be used between stair noses and stairs to further increase the level of non-liability? Yes, you can use the appropriate strips between your stairs and your riser, but you should be aware that some surfaces cannot be treated with anti-slip paints or epoxy. So, before you decide to invest in non-slip strips, take some time and consider the surface on which they will be installed, and if possible, test drives your idea to see how it works in real life.

  9. Will all of my stairways require the same non-slip materials? No. Some stairways are much more hazardous than others. For example, you may need to use less sensitive, aircraft-grade aluminum for the support on your staircase railing. Other stair nosing materials include rubber, thermoplastic, and polystyrene. The type of material you choose depends on the type of stairs and your specific environment.
