TheMaidenmilestoneofmycareerwasachievedin1992whenIgotadmissioninBachelorProgrammeinMechanicalEngineering.Inthefifthsemester,IcameacrossanIndustrialEngineeringSubject(whichwasmoreaboutOperationManagement).IdiscoveredmypassionforManagementin1994.Andtherealdilemmabegan,whattodonextaftergraduation!Jobortogoforhighereducationandifhighereducation,thenwhichsubject?engineeringor management? Duringmysemesterofengineering,Ihadan internship/projectat AECPowerPlant,Sabarmati, Ahmedabad(now,itsTorrentPowerLtd.).Icame acrosstherealorganizationandexposureof workinginanengineeringcompanyforafew months.Lookingattheprospects,itwasdecided thatPGisessentialasgraduationwasnotsufficient, Irealized. MyHODcalledmeonceduringthefinalexamsof Engineeringandaskedmewhatmyfuture.Itold him,notyetdecided.Iamappearingfora campus/jobinterviewbutthat’snotwhat I wanted (togetajobimmediately). Itoldhimaboutmyexposureduringtheinternshipandmynewpassionaboutmanagement.Heaskedmeduringmyinternship,whetherIhadstudiedorganizationalhierarchy?Inoddedpositively.Hefurtheraskedme,howmanyyearsitwouldtakemetobecomeamanager?andIrepliedapproximately12-15yearsminimum“.Heaskedme”WouldyoubeinterestedifIshowedyouthewaytobecomeamanagerwithin2/3years?” Certainly,IexclaimedandheadvisedmetopursueanMBA/PGDBM.HetoldmethatIcouldexcel if Ihadengineeringandbusinessmanagement knowledge.Thiswasmysecondturningpointofmy life,andI followed hisadvice.His inclination forPGwasintheUSAbutIknewifIwouldgothere,Iwouldn’tcomeback.ThefamilyvalueshelpedmetotakeacleardecisionthatIwouldstudyinINDIAandserveINDIA.IstudiedinGovernmentEngineeringCollegewherefeeswerereallynegligibleatthattime,butIwastoldbyoneprofessorthattomakeoneengineerinINDIA,theGovernmentspendsINR700,000in4yearsinGujarat. IgotadmissioninMBA/PGDBMwithalmostzeropreparation,Iwasluckyenough,andrightfromthefirstclassofgeneralmanagementtillIcompletedthecourse,IlearnedeverysubjectwithutmostpassionasIreallyenjoyedlearninganditspracticalimplications. Thethirdturningpointcameinmylifewhenthere wasachoiceaftermyPGwhethertojointhe lucrativefinancialservicessectororthe engineering/technologysector.Thesalarywas3 timeshigherinthefinancialservicessectorthanintechnology,butIhavechosenthehardpathandoptedtoworkforasmallbuthighlysophisticatedtechnology companyinthefieldofCNCMachines&theupcomingLaserTechnologyforIndustrialApplicationsasIpursuedmypassionandlearningsrather earnings. Thesearethreeturningpointsattheearlystageof mycareerthatsetthedirectionofmyprofessional life.Iameternallyindebtedtomyteachers/ professorswhoencouragedme,identifiedmy talents,andmentoredmefortherightcareerpath.
