1. Importance and History of Engineer's Day Did you know, Engineer's Day is an important day for all the Engineers in India? Why is this day important? What is the story behind this day? Let us find out in this real-life story of Engineer's Day. We owe this day to Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya also known as the "Father of Modern Mysore State". History of Engineer's Day: Sir M. Visvesvaraya was born in a Telugu-Brahmin family in 1861, on 15th September. He was also popularly known as Sir MV, a prominent Indian civil engineer, and a statesman. His first job was as an Assistant Engineer with the Public Works Department of Bombay (Mumbai now). He later joined the Indian Irrigation Commission on the invitation. The implementation of an intricate system of irrigation in the Deccan Plateau by Sir MV made him recognizable. His design and patent of an automatic weir water floodgates system was first installed in 1903 at Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune. The design of the gates raised the storage level in the reservoir to the maximum level without any damage to the dam. This automatic floodgates system was very successful and its implementation was at the Tigra Dam in Gwalior and Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mandya/Mysore, Karnataka. The Government of India in 1906-1907, sent Sir MV to Aden in Yemen to study the water supply and drainage systems. His project was successfully implemented in Aden. Sir MV became a celebrity after a successful design of flood protection system for Hyderabad. His development of the biggest reservoir in Asia at the Vishkhapatnam port from sea erosion is still an engineering marvel. His knowledge and experience was always shared

2. in the form of technical advice in many future projects. Namely the Mokama Bridge over the Ganga River in Bihar and many more. Importance of Engineer's Day: Since Sir MV, a legendary engineer of his time. He was also internationally recognized for his expertise in harnessing water resources. Sir MV also served as the Diwan of Mysore State. Sir MV received India's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1955 for his contribution to the Engineering world. He was also honoured with the Knight Commander of the British India Empire by King George V for his immense contributions to the good of the public. Therefore, 15th September, his birth date is celebrated every year as Engineer's Day in India, Sri Lanka and Tanzania to remember his contributions. He is famous for successful designs and construction of several river dams, bridges and implementation of irrigation and drinking water schemes all over India.
