  1. Different types of surge protection devices you should know!!! Very often we see power surges in our locality, but have you ever thought about what exactly is a power surge, and how can you stop it? Let's explore this area a little bit further to enlighten our horizon of knowledge.

  2. What is a surge? A surge is a transient wave of current, power or voltage in an electrical circuit. Its duration is generally less than a half-cycle of the normal voltage waveform. Surge is often oscillatory, decaying over time, and can be of any polarity, i.e. positive or negative. Now that we have confused you with an electrical jargon let’s see a simple definition of a surge. A surge is defined as a very fast, high-voltage variation above the 110% of regular voltage supply which is generally very short-termed, i.e. measured in a few milliseconds. Sources of Surge Did you know that 60-80 percent of surges are created within a building without the support of any external factor? And that’s exactly why we recommend you to get a surge protection system installed in your home/building/ workspace as soon as possible. But before going through the devices to prevent power surge, let’s see the types of a power surge. Surge generally originates from two sources: Internal Sources •Switching of Electrical Loads •Magnetic and Inductive coupling •Static electricity External Sources •Lightning Types of Surge suppression devices: Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors TVSS are the devices that act as a cutoff if there is a transient spike or momentary surge of electrical power on an AC line. It is a guarding mechanism, to prevent situations like power level going above par to the point that integrated circuits in

  3. microprocessors can handle. These devices come in various models depending on the levels of clamping and capacity. Albeit these devices can work after a surge, but their capacity might get affected. Whole-House surge suppressors Generally known as panel-mounted surge suppressors, these are typically hard- wired to the service panel. It takes about two hours for a licensed electrician to fit this. It would be best if you look for features like thermal fuses, and lights or alarms that indicate when a device is affected by a surge. Power strips with surge protection These are the most common and affordable type of surge protection system out there in the market. These devices are rated in Joules (SI unit of energy). Generally, the more it can handle, means better is the surge protector power strip. But one point you should always remember is that, with time, the parts inside the protector do not remain the same and therefore, its effectiveness reduces with time. Concluding Note: Don’t wait for the lightning to strike. Act before it happens so that you and your devices remain safe during any mishappening. There is no reason not to get a surge suppression device installed at your home or your building. For more information regarding this topic, refer to ECS International Inc.
