  11. Core Disciplines … Shared-Visioning Creative conceptualization Design & Planning Restorative, Regenerative & Sustainable Development ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  12. 1 2 3 ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  13. 1 2 3 Dull, inert cities, it is true, do contain the seeds of their own destruction and little else.  But lively, diverse, intense cities contain the seeds of their own regeneration, with energy enough to carry over for problems and needs outside themselves – Jane Jacobs (The Death & life of Great American Cities) ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  14. 1 2 3 “A collective process that precede the final regenerative and aesthetic vision statement drawing upon neighborhood narrative (memory), behaviors, and dreams for the future.” ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  15. 1 2 3 How residents view their neighborhood will affect sustainability of design & subsequent development, thus effective conceptualization willbegin with grass-root neighborhood shared-visioning. Shared-visioning includes: Wandersmänner – “The Wanderer”: A stroll around the neighborhood to observe how the neighborhood feels, looks, and functions. Neighborhood Narrative: What are the stories of the neighborhood; the stories of people and buildings, past and present? What stories do we wish to create for future generation? ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  16. 1 2 3 Neighborhood Narratives are those collective memories & stories of residents, past & present, interaction with the built, natural, and human environments. These narratives give shape and form to a collective, shared neighborhood vision for the future. Effective conceptualization to be both sustainable and regenerative must built upon shared neighborhood narrative. ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  17. 1 2 3 Neighborhood Behaviors will affect sustainability of design & subsequent development, thus effective conceptualization will take into consideration neighborhood behaviors. Neighborhood behaviors may be defined as: Complex Adaptive Systems ~ How elements/residents interact, interactions between neighborhood and adjacent neighborhoods, etc. Stochastic Actions ~ Random, probabilistic, and paradoxical variables ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  18. 1 2 3 Integral to the design process is the charrette.  a creative, intense, collaboratively open, multidisciplinary conceptualization process to work up a design for an entire neighborhood or a specific project.  Charrettes draw upon continuous feedback (neighborhood forums, design reviews, impact studies) involving all stakeholders in the loop. ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  19. 1 2 3 An effective charrette will not only utilize the utilize the usual – planners, architects & designers – but also project-appropriate “creatives” that draw upon a wide-range of expertise and experience to create a fully conceptualized project design.  ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006

  20. 1 2 3 The final plan, ready for implementation, includes an environmentally sound design that emphasizes healing the built and natural environmental health of the neighborhood. ® © Urban Paradoxes 2006
