  1. What Is National Insurance Number National insurance number is known as NI. It is your personal account number. Anyone who works or studies in the UK requires an NI Number. It also a reference number when communicating with the department for communities and HM Revenue & Customs(HMRC).

  2. If you wish to study in UK you'll be required by law to have national insurance number. This is a code number which is unique, and will identify you to the tax collection department of the govt.

  3. 1.Navigating the process • The initial segment of the procedure is to compose a meeting with a Job Center office. You will then need to go to your meeting with as much supporting documentation as you need to affirm your personality, your address in the UK and that you have been searching for work. After the meeting, you can hope to hold up in the vicinity of 2 and a month and a half to get notice of your National Insurance number in the post, expecting yours is a direct case and your qualification to work in the UK is clear. • 2.Third party agencies • Applying for a National Insurance number through the Department of Work and Pensions is for nothing out of pocket. It is time consuming though, and you may have to take time off work to attend the interview and spend money getting documents together • 3.Before your National Insurance Number is issued. • The letter will also tell you which documents to bring to prove your identity, eg: • passport or identity card • residence permit • birth or adoption certificate • marriage or civil partnership certificate • driving license

  4. When do you need one? • You can only apply for a National Insurance number once you’re in the UK  Who needs one? • Everyone over the age of 16, who is either employed or self-employed in the UK, needs an NI number.
